PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Its four game win-streak came to an end when the Plattsburgh State softball team was narrowly defeated by State University of New York Athletic Conference foe Brockport, 2-1, in game one of a doubleheader at home. However, the Cardinals came back for revenge in game two and topped the Golden Eagles, 4-3, for the split.
Plattsburgh improves to 16-9 for the season, 5-2 in the SUNYAC. Brockport is now 23-6 overall, 7-4 in conference play.
Ashley Marshall earned both the loss and the win for the Cardinals in the circle, placing her record at 11-3. In 7.2 innings of work, Marshall allowed five hits and struck out 10.
In game one, the Cardinals scored first in the bottom of the third inning when
Danielle Gjergji smashed her third triple of the year to right field.
Nicole Diemer scored on the play, having walked her way on base earlier in the inning.
Brockport rallied back with two runs in the fifth and it would be all the Golden Eagles would need for the win.
The second game began with both teams plating a run in the first inning. Brockport's came when Nicki Odrobina made her way home on a pass ball and Diemer scored for the Cardinals on a wild pitch.
Plattsburgh pulled ahead in the third inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to center field by Gjergji that allowed
Diana Garces to score and a single through the left side by
Ashley Napear that drove in Diemer.
Brockport would answer back with two runs of its own in the fifth, including a solo shot over the center field fence by Danielle Sage. This would force the Cardinals to play a lot of small ball in order to move runners into scoring position during the next two innings. It proved fruitful in the bottom of the seventh when
Erin Jamieson pushed a bunt through the right side with one out on the board and
Katie McNally slide into the plate for the winning run.
Heather Loughran started the game in the circle for Plattsburgh. She pitched 4.1 innings, allowed one hit and sat down four before
Tanya Fedyshyn took over. Fedyshyn threw for two innings and allowed two hits. Marshall came in with one out on the board in the top of the seventh and closed out the game.
Offensively, Gjergji, Diemer, Napear and
Erin Florkiewicz led Plattsburgh with two hits apiece. Diemer scored three of the team's five runs during the afternoon and Gjergji drove in two.
The Cardinals take on Geneseo at home tomorrow at 1 p.m. in a SUNYAC doubleheader.
