Cardinals Emerge from Florida with a Winning Record

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State softball team, under the tutelage of first-year interim head coach Stephanie Zweig, completed its trip to the NTC Dot Richardson Tournament with a 9-5 overall record after defeating D'Youville, 8-1, and falling to Keene State, 3-1, on its final day of competition in the Sunshine State.

Ashley Napear led the Cardinals by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in against D'Youville. She drove in the first run of the game for Plattsburgh when she knocked a double to left center and gave Amy Woo the opportunity to score from second. Woo and Nicole Diemer recorded the only other hits of the game for the Cards, both singles.

Of Plattsburgh's eight runs, only Woo's in the first inning was earned. The run helped solidify Woo's place on the top of Plattsburgh's all-time career list, she has scored 119 times over her four years as a Cardinal.

Ashley Marshall tossed 5.1 innings, allowed three hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out 12 for the win. Tanya Fedyshyn closed out the game for Plattsburgh, giving up three hits and sitting down one batter in 1.2 innings of work.

Against Keene, Woo, Napear and Erin Jamieson knocked the only three hits of the game for the Cardinals. Woo's was the lone extra base swing, culminating in an RBI double in the third inning. Jamieson scored the only run of the contest for Plattsburgh on the play.

With the double, Woo moved to the top of Plattsburgh's career list for hits. She has racked up 159 so far in her career.

Heather Loughran earned the loss for Plattsburgh. Loughran gave up five hits, two earned runs, walked four and sat down five batters in 5.2 innings of work. Fedyshyn once again came in to the close out the contest and faced one batter.

Overall, Erin Florkiewicz led the Cardinal squad with 20 putouts from behind the plate and Woo contributed three assists from second base.

Plattsburgh returns to New York to take on North Country and State University of New York Athletic Conference foe Potsdam at home on April 2. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. at Cardinal Park.
