Cardinal Softball Extends Win-Streak to Four

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Plattsburgh State softball team extended its win-streak to four with victories over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, 1-0, and Western New England, 6-3, at the NTC Dot Richardson Tournament. The Golden Bears were the first team to score against the Cardinals this season.

Ashley Marshall earned her second-straight career win and second-straight career shutout against FDU-Florham, racking up seven strikeouts in five innings. Tanya Fedyshyn earned the save, finishing the game with two scoreless innings.

Nicole Diemer laid down the squeeze bunt for the Cardinals that brought Nicole Pomponio to the plate for the game-winning run in the top of the fourth inning. Pomponio was pinch running for Ashley Napear, who got on base with a double.

Against Western New England, Heather Loughran started the game, struck out six and picked up the win, while Fedyshyn came in once again for the save in the last one and two-thirds innings of the contest and sat down three batters.

Dana Mandery recorded two runs batted in during the game, while Napear, Danielle Gjergji and Amy Woo each drove in one apiece.

Plattsburgh trailed 2-0 early on and then scored three runs to pull ahead. The Golden Bears proceeded to tie the game, but in the bottom of the fifth inning Mandery knocked Erin Jamieson in with a single following a nine-pitch at-bat--the longest at-bat of the day for the Cardinals.

"Western New England is a really tough team, but we came from behind and took it to them for the win," commented Plattsburgh head coach Stephanie Zweig. "We have really had a concentrated effort across the board from our players so far."

Plattsburgh takes to the field against Westfield State and Wesleyan (Conn.) tomorrow in Florida.
