FREDONIA, N.Y. - Taylor Amarando posted her third-straight double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) for the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team, but it was not enough to lift the Cardinals past the hosting Fredonia Blue Devils in. Fredonia won the State University of New York Athletic Conference game by a score of 63-53.
Plattsburgh drops to 2-8 overall and remains win-less in the conference, 0-4. Fredonia rises to 7-2 for the season, 3-0 in the SUNYAC.
Stephanie McCoy, who led the Cardinals with 15 points and three steals, started the game off with a three-pointer after receiving a pass from Catherine Cassidy. Plattsburgh would hold tight to the lead, which topped out at eight points at the 10:51 mark, until there were just under eight minutes left to play in the first half.
It was then that the momentum shifted in Fredonia's favor. Caroline Hourihan stole the ball from McCoy and helped it find its way into Nicole Calbi's hands. Calbi sank a jumper to give Fredonia its first advantage of the game and, while Plattsburgh would take a small lead twice more before the buzzer, Fredonia ended the half ahead, 30-29.
The Blue Devils would not relinquish the lead once in the second half and walked off with the win.
For Fredonia, Merissa Gaeta topped the team with 18 points and 12 boards, followed by Grace Moore with 12 points and Katie Landy with 10. Moore also nabbed a game-high five steals and Calbi dished out six assists.
Plattsburgh returns home on Friday, January 15, to take on SUNYAC opponent Cortland. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
