PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - A strong second half rally by the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team gave the Cardinals a chance to stay to in the game against visiting Cortland, but the Red Dragons held tight to their lead and won the game, 77-58. Plattsburgh came back after being down 44-23 at the half and scored 33 points to Cortland's 35 after the break, improving steadily as the game continued on.
The Cardinals now stand at 2-9 for the season, 0-5 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, while Cortland's record improves to 9-3 overall, 4-1 in the SUNYAC.
Taylor Amarando, having only made one layup in the first, posted 11 points during the final leg of the game to lead the Cardinals comeback. Kerri Salisbury led Plattsburgh with seven points in the first half and contributed three more in the second to tie Casey Clark for second on the team with 10 points for the evening. Amarando and Clark both pulled down eight boards for the Cards. Stephanie McCoy dished out four assists and nabbed two steals.
For Cortland, Jessica Laing sank an impressive 28 points and went 6-for-10 from behind the arc. Laing also topped both teams with 10 rebounds. Allyson Biordi recorded a game-high seven assists and Jamie Piperato made two blocks during the contest.
Plattsburgh wraps up its weekend at home tomorrow with a game against Oswego. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
