PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh women's basketball came into the game against the visiting St. Lawrence Saints the underdogs. The Saints were 4-0 on the year, while the Cardinals had only racked up one in the victory column so far. However, Plattsburgh persevered and came out on top, defeating the Saints 50-48 in regulation.
Plattsburgh now holds a 2-3 season record and St. Lawrence falls to 4-1.
Senior forward Molly Harte led the Plattsburgh squad through the game, scoring 18 points. Harte and teammate Lindsey Larivee emerged with 10 points after the first half, helping to give the Cardinals a 24-21 lead during the break. Meanwhile, Taylor Amarando only sank one free-throw during the first half, but went on a hot streak in the second and racked up an additional 15.
Amarando also led the team with nine rebounds. Catherine Cassidy notched two steals and dished out a team-high five assists, as well.
The game came down to the wire when St. Lawrence tied it up at 48 with just over two minutes left in the second half. Both teams suffered a number of missed shots before Amarando finally clinched the game for the Cards when she stole the ball off of St. Lawrence's Casey Capello and drove down the court, sinking a layup with 21 seconds to go. After a series of fouls by Amarando and Larivee and two timeouts by the Saints, Capello missed a three-pointer with eight seconds left, giving Plattsburgh the ball. Iris Santoni recorded another foul for St. Lawrence and Kerri Salisbury missed the shot for Plattsburgh, but with only two second on clock the Saints could not get off another shot and the Cardinals celebrated their hard-fought victory.
Capello and Abby Stanton both posted 15 points for the Saints, with Stanton tying Nyasha Miller for a team-high seven boards. Santoni topped the team with five assists.
Next up, Plattsburgh takes to the road this weekend against New Paltz on Friday at 6 p.m. and Oneonta on Saturday at 2 p.m.
