MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team came to play against the nationally-ranked No. 20 Middlebury Panthers and fought hard through 90 minutes of regulation competition and 20 minutes of overtime to emerge tied, 1-1. The Cardinals now hold an 8-5-3 regular season record, while the Panthers move to 8-1-2.
Middlebury struck first, scoring their goal during the 32nd minute of play. A corner kick from Kristen Lundquist was skipped by Amy Schlueter to Hannah Newman, whose header hit the crossbar. Madding was there to gather the rebound and find the back of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals tied the game in the 68th minute, as Danielle Wiemer scored her first of the season after a flurry of action in the goal area. The Cardinals kept up the pressure, as Middlebury keeper Lauryn Torch made a diving save on a shot from Plattsburgh's Lindsey Keyser just minutes later to keep the game in a 1-1 tie.
In goal for the Cardinals, Alina Greiser racked up a season-high 12 saves. All in all, Plattsburgh recorded 15 shots to Middlebury's 32. Liz Radigan led the Cardinals with four shots and Helen Giroux added three of her own to the mix.
For Middlebury, Torch nabbed eight saves during the contest and Drew Smith posted a game-high nine shots. The Panthers out did the Cardinals with 20 fouls to nine and seven corner kicks to four.
Up next for Plattsburgh, the Cardinals will celebrate Senior Day and close out their regular season at home on Saturday, October 24, against No. 19 Ithaca. The game is set to start at noon.
