2024-25 Women's Basketball All-Conference Teams
SYRACUSE, N.Y. –
Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y. / Saranac) of the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team was selected to the 2024-25 All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) second team as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Couture repeats as an all-conference selection after earning third team honors last season.
The senior guard/forward was a catalyst for Plattsburgh on the offensive end, averaging 12.9 points per game (PPG) to lead the team while shooting a career-best 40.4% from the field. She recorded double figures in all but six games and put up three 20-plus point performances including a season-high 24 points on Jan. 11 at Buffalo State. Couture had four games of five assists or more, totaling 67, recording an impressive seven assists on Dec. 6 at Morrisville and Jan. 11 at Buffalo State as she was one of the Cardinals' top playmakers. She had four games with multiple blocks, recording three blocks in three of those, and eight games with multiple steals, highlighted by a season-high four on Dec. 16 against Brockport proving to be an asset on the defensive end. Not only was the Redford native the leading scorer, but she was also second on the team in rebounding, averaging 8.1 rebounds per game (RPG) that ranked fifth in the conference. During the season, she had seven double-doubles and 10 games, with 10 or more rebounds, which was highlighted by a career-high 15 rebounds on Dec. 6 at Morrisville and Feb. 15 at Canton. In Couture's final season at Plattsburgh, she surpassed the 1,000-point milestone and helped lead the Cardinals to their first postseason appearance in a decade. In the SUNYAC first round matchup against Canton, the senior had 10 points and 11 rebounds and ended her career with a double-double.
Kayla Campbell of Cortland and Giavanna White-Principio were named Co-Player of the Year while Julia Sabatino of New Paltz was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year and Kieonna Christmas of Morrisville was selected as the Rookie of the Year. Head coach Colleen Ames and her staff from Cortland were recognized as the Coaching Staff of the Year.
Plattsburgh State finished the season 14-12 (10-8 SUNYAC) and made the SUNYAC playoffs for the first time in a decade. The fifth-seeded Cardinals matched up against fourth-seeded Canton in the first round on Tuesday, Feb. 25, and fell 61-58.
