PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With a new head coach in former assistant Jessica Miller, the Plattsburgh State softball team will look to return to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoff action for the third time in the last four years in the 2025 season. 

The team will begin their 2025 season in Clermont, Florida at THE Spring Games on Sunday, March 16 when they take on Keene State in the first game of a split-doubleheader.
 
"We are really excited to get going. From day one, the team has put in tremendous effort, pushing themselves both physically and mentally to be at their best," Miller said, "They're growing stronger as a unit, and I can't wait to see all that this spring has in store for us."
 
Sophomore Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) returns as the team's only All-SUNYAC honoree from last season, after hitting .345 with a team-high 18 extra-base hits. The team also returns their top arm from last year in junior Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) as both she and Isaacs will be counted on to lead their respective positional groups.

Pitchers:

After the departure of Julia Golino, the keys to the pitching staff will go to Ormerod, who stepped up last year to become the team's ace. The junior put up a 3.30 ERA as a sophomore, including a 6-8 record and 10 complete games. She totaled 95.1 innings and struck out 85 batters and will look to lead the team this year in the circle.
 
Also returning for Plattsburgh State will be two senior arms who transferred in last season and will be counted on to be key pieces of the team's pitching staff. Sarah Milyko (Goshen, N.Y./Chester Academy) finished second on the team in ERA with a 4.92 clip, appearing in 18 games and compiling a 2-2 record over 42.2 innings. Carly Gemmett (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) recorded 30.2 innings pitched last year over nine appearances and six starts.
 
Sophomore Cadey Wheat (Edwards, N.Y/Edwards-Knox) is the team's lone newcomer to the staff, transferring into Plattsburgh after a season at Elmira College where she appeared in 18 games and totaled 37.1 innings.

Infield:

While most of the infield remains intact for the Cardinals, the team will have to replace three-year starter at short, Claire Palmer, who finished fourth all-time in batting average over the program's history.

Isaacs will make the move over to short for this season and will look to keep the strong defense that Palmer showcased and keep the fantastic bat that she displayed in her first season at Plattsburgh. Senior Mikayla Manalo (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), who carries a career .341 on-base percentage over three seasons, will likely factor into the infield picture if she is not in the outfield, where she should see time as well. Also returning to man the infield in 2025 is junior Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill), who earned 33 starts last season. Milyko will also be an option in the infield for the Cardinals this season, after making several appearances at first base last year.
 
Three newcomers will look to fill in the holes of the Plattsburgh infield as first-years Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), Bella Toleman (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater), as well as sophomore Alex Whitson (Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) will join the unit this spring.

Outfield:

The Cardinal outfield will have a much different look for the second straight season as Dolly Garguilo and Dimitra Mouhteros, who each started 33 games last year, departed after graduation. Sophomore Michelle DeFina (Commack, N.Y./Commack) started in 23 games last year in the outfield and will be one of the main options this year to roam the grass in Cardinal Park.
 
Sophomore Leila Toomey (Commack, N.Y./Commack) who saw action in nine games last year, returns to the Cardinals this year looking for an expanded role in the outfield picture. Manalo and junior Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's), who have primary positions elsewhere, will also see time in the outfield this spring.
 
Three newcomers will add to the outfield depth in 2025 as Lindsay Barnes (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantwon), Gianna Montes (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East), and Mikayla Pappas (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) will be a part of the unit in 2024.

Catchers:

Plattsburgh State returns all four of their catchers from last season, led by Noll who finished first on the team in runs scored (29) and walks (15) in 2025, while also boasting a .340 batting average. Sophomore Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) saw action in 20 games last year, with Alyssa Hemingway (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Meghan Cox (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) return to create a deep positional group this season.
   
In the conference's preseason poll, the Cards were picked to finish in the final playoff spot at sixth place, with defending conference tournament New Paltz earning the poll's top spot. The full press release on the poll can be found here.
