Webber Wins Two Events as Men's Track and Field Places Second at the SLU Open

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's track and field team wrapped up their 2024-25 regular season on Friday at the SLU Open, earning a second-place finish with 148 points.

St. Lawrence won the meet with 201 points, while Potsdam was third and Mohawk Valley Community College was fourth.

First-year Nathan Webber (Cadyville, N.Y./Saranac) took home two first-place finishes for Plattsburgh State, winning both the weight throw and shot put. He tossed two career bests, with a 14.28-meter throw in the weight throw and a 12.70-meter toss in the shotput.

Junior Charles Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) and first-year Jackson Hooper (Elizabethtown, N.Y./Boquet Valley) each posted All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Championship qualifying marks as they both took first in their respective events. Cypress matched a season-best sprint in the 60-meter dash, running a time of 6.95 seconds for the third time this season. Hooper cleared a career-best 1.92 meters in the high jump, matching the AARTFC mark.

Sophomore Ryan Beltran (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) put up two great efforts in the 200-meter and 400-meter races, earning first in the 200-meter event and second in the 400-meter. Beltran put up a career-best mark of 23.31 seconds to win the 200 and had a time of 52.28 seconds in the 400. First-year Ethan Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) finished second in the 200-meter even behind Beltran, with a new career-best mark of 23.44 seconds.

First-year Trevon Mitchell (Peru, N.Y./Peru) was the final victor of the day for the Cardinals, winning the long jump with a career-best jump of 6.20 meters. Sophomore Isaiah Ritter (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) was second in the same event with his top jump of 6.17 meters on Friday, while Tyler Baker (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) finished third with a 6.16-meter jump.

Senior Isaiah Martens-Collins (London, Ontario/Penticton) earned two third-place finishes with career-best marks in the 60-meter hurdles (10.12 seconds) and in the pole vault (3.25 meters). Junior Jordan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) also placed third, as he ran a time of 7.11 seconds in the 60-meter dash.

The 4x400-meter relay team of senior Justin Kumrow (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), and sophomores Zander Brown (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), Matthias Lauvau (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck), and Matt DeJulio (Wynantskill, N.Y./Averill Park) finished third with a time of 3:47.56.

The Cardinals will next compete at the SUNYAC Championships on Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, Mar. 1 at SUNY Brockport. The team will only bring qualifiers, which for most events would be the top 20 marks this season.
