PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team is looking to get back into postseason action as third-year head coach
Sam Quinn-Loeb returns with an experienced roster in 2024. After the team qualified for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament for the first time since 2012 in 2021, the Cardinals finished with the same conference record but were unable to crack the top four spots in the SUNYAC standings to make the postseason. Plattsburgh will kick off its season on the road when it takes on SUNY Cobleskill at Schoharie High School on March 3 at noon.
Quinn-Loeb returns both of the team's All-SUNYAC selections in junior first baseman
Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) and senior left-handed pitcher
Chris Santic (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland), while the team also returns seven of their nine regular position players from last year's lineup and will need to replace less than a third of innings from last year's pitching group.
Infield:
The Cardinals will have no trouble finding production from first base in 2024, as Cremin returns to man the position this year. The two-time all-conference selection was among the league's best last year, hitting .333 and adding an OPS of .905 while slugging a team-best three home runs. Cremin also led the team with 42 hits and 24 RBI as he will be a key piece on this year's team. Sophomore
Brayden Trombley (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) will return after picking up his first two collegiate hits in three plate appearances last year, with first-year students
Austin Caldwell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and
Luciano Fiorello (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) figuring to work into the mix this year at first.
Senior
Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) returns as one of the most experienced bats on the team after putting up his second straight season with above a .300 batting average last year. The second baseman, who will also see time at shortstop, led the team with 11 doubles last year, hit .301, and had a .890 OPS with two homers and 21 RBI. He also added 10 stolen bases to lead the team and was hit by a pitch a program record 15 times in 2023, helping him to a team-best .435 on-base percentage. Junior
Joey Di Rocco (Congers' N.Y./Clarkstown South) and junior
Justice Suafoa (Kinderhook, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) each proved to be capable infielders last year, seeing time at second base and elsewhere in the infield as they will expect the same heading into 2024.
Graduate student
Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) will once again captain the infield in 2024 after collecting 22 hits last year and stealing six bases, as he will likely be the primary shortstop when not on the mound in 2024, with Kornblau being the likely replacement for his middle infield partner.
Senior
Nick Cergol (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) figures to be in the mix at third base in 2024 after playing there primarily last year. Cergol had 27 hits in 2023 and slugged two homers, including the team's lone walk-off homer of the year.
Newcomers to the infield group in 2024 include transfers in graduate student
Aidan Diltz (Monroe, N.Y./Monrow-Woodbury) and sophomore
Bostyn Duquette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh), as well as first-year students
Jonathan Beale (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys),
Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy),
Nick Pace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), and
Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove).
Outfield:
Graduate students
Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Mike Rasquin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) will each use their final year of eligibility in 2024 as they return to lead the outfield unit in 2024. Gonzalski hit.262 last year and was second on the team with 22 RBI and third among qualifiers with an on-base of .390. Rasquin only played in 11 games last year before sustaining a season-ending injury but will be back to be one of the more experienced guys in the outfield. Senior
Jack Defayette (Rotterdam, N.Y./Schalmont) also returns in 2024, after a strong first campaign with Plattsburgh last year, hitting .250 and collecting 14 RBI and eight extra-base hits.
Also returning to the outfield group in 2024 is
Ben Catrambone (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), who had six hits and four RBI, and
Liam Gray (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern) as the pair will look to be in the mix for innings. Junior
Zach Rainville (Saranac, N.Y./Saranac) and sophomore
Dylan Bass (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) are each looking to be impact players after transferring into Plattsburgh this year. Rainville was an all-conference selection at Cazenovia in 2023 and Bass comes in after spending a year with NCAA Division II powerhouse Tampa University.
Frankie Kowal (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) and
Drew Romesser (Akron, N.Y./Akron) are the newcomers to the unit in 2024, as they will look to grab innings this season.
Catcher:
After a year with not much catching depth, junior
Adam Wein (North Rockland, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) will have plenty of options besides him for the upcoming season. Graduate student
Jake Ourvan (New York, N.Y./Baruch), who brings collegiate catching experience most recently from Baruch College, and first-year
Ian Warren (Esopus, N.Y./Highland) figure to be first in line for time alongside Wein, while transfer junior
Daniel Novelli (Maracy, Venezuela/Cypress Creek (Fla.)) and first-year students
Jake Calkins (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and
Max Frank (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) will also vie for innings in 2024.
Pitchers:
The Cards will look to replace less than 100 of their 286.1 innings pitched last year as they had into a long 2024 season. Santic will lead the charge after a breakout campaign as a starting pitcher in 2023 earning him All-SUNYAC second-team accolades. The senior had a team-best ERA of 2.48 and threw 65.1 innings while striking out a team-high 51 batters. Veit figures to work beside him as a weekend starter after doing so the last two seasons, as he pitched 49 innings last year and struck out 46 batters. Junior
Kolby Mordecki (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) is poised to be an impact starter for the Cards a well after a strong summer and pitching in 33 innings last year for the Cards.
The bullpen will be led by junior
Logan Avin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Waterford (Conn.)) after his breakout season last year saw him post a 2.33 ERA and nail down three saves in a team-high 14 appearances. Senior
Eric Agan (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and junior

Matt Edwards (Commack, N.Y./Commack), junior
Nick Goldberg (Commack, N.Y./Commack), sophomore
Dylan Govin (Coram, N.Y./Longwood), and senior
Tyler Kohn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North). Bass and Duquette will also be in the mix this year for bullpen depth and figure to work some innings this year as well as transfer dual-players.
First-year arms for the team this year include
Jack Castillo (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa),
Ty Nelson (Rosedale, N.Y./Springfield Gardens)
Anthony Ponzo (Long Island, N.Y./Great Neck South), Romesser, and
Justin Sargent (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna).
