ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's cross country team competed at the 2023 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) on Saturday at Fortin Park in Oneonta, New York, finishing in fifth place as a team, the program's highest finish since 2011.
Noah Bonesteel (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park), was the team's top finisher, coming in 22
nd place overall.
Bonesteel was also awarded the prestigious SUNYAC Elite 20 award, an award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program, which recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. Bonesteel, an art studio major, and New Paltz's Vincent Mandracchia, a music major, each currently hold a 4.0 grade point average.
Plattsburgh State finished in fifth place, accumulating 135 points to finish ahead of Fredonia, Oswego State, New Paltz, Buffalo State, and Potsdam. Geneseo was the overall team victor, followed by Brockport, Cortland, and Oneonta, as the Knights won their ninth straight championship and their 21
st overall. The Cardinals next compete at the NCAA Division III Mideast Region Championships, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 11.
Bonesteel was the 22
nd man to cross the line on Saturday, as the junior finished with a time of 26:38.8 on the eight-kilometer course to lead Plattsburgh State.
Justin Kumrow (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was the second Cardinal to finish, posting a time of 26:59.4 to place 30
th. Right behind him was sophomore
Erik Kucera (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai), who took 31
st place with his mark of 27:00.7.
Jeremy Gundrum (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Averill Park) took 35
th place for Plattsburgh, rounding out the top four guys for the Cards, as he had a mark of 27:13.0.
Graham Richard (Albany, N.Y./Albany) started the next round of Cardinal finishers, posting a time of 28:44.2 in his first SUNYAC Championship race, finishing in 60
th place. Right behind Richard was junior
Michael Brockway (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and first-year
Zander Brown (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), who finished in 63
rd and 66
th place respectively for Plattsburgh State. Brockway had a mark of 28:56.4 while Brown posted a time of 29:07.5.
