OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's cross country team finished sixth out of 10 teams at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships hosted by Oswego State on Saturday at the Fallbrook Recreation Center, posting a score of 187 points.
Sophomore
Noah Bonesteel (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) earned the SUNYAC's Elite 20 Award along with SUNY Cortland's senior Adam Schreiber, as the pair both own a 4.0 cumulative GPA, with Bonesteel majoring in studio art and Schreiber majoring in sport studies. The SUNYAC Elite 20, an award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
Junior
Michael Brockway (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) was the top Cardinal finisher by nearly a minute, as he traversed the eight-kilometer course in 27:15.4 at a 5:29 mile pace for 29th overall. Bonesteel and first-year student Erik Kucera (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) took 43rd (28:14.1) and 45th (28:20.8), while first-year student Ethan Kahl (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) crossed 56th (29:05.7) and first-year student Nick Gelsomino (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) claimed 78th (30:40.40). Sean Grady (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) and sophomore
Denali Rodriguez-Garnica (Port Henry, N.Y./Moriah) also factored into the meet's scoring by finishing 79th (30:46.2) and 83rd (31:22.8), respectively.
SUNY Geneseo won its eighth straight conference championship with a score of 23 points, while Geneseo's senior Nick Andrews was the top individual finisher with a time of 25:28.5. SUNY Brockport (second, 35), Cortland (third, 94), Fredonia (fourth, 104), SUNY Oneonta (fifth, 124), Plattsburgh State (sixth, 187), SUNY New Paltz (seventh, 216), Oswego (eighth, 229), SUNY Potsdam (ninth, 261) and Buffalo State (10th, 305) rounded out the remainder of the team standings
Plattsburgh State next competes at the NCAA Division III Mideast Region Championships on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 12 p.m. at St. Lawrence University.
