CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's track and field team opened up its 2021-22 indoor season with a second-place finish out of five teams at the Saints Holiday Relays hosted by St. Lawrence University on Saturday, scoring 124 points.
 
The Cardinals were 12 points in front of third-place Utica College (112 points) and also beat fourth-place Le Moyne College (67) and fifth-place SUNY Potsdam (7). Host St. Lawrence placed first with 163 points.
 
Plattsburgh State finished first in three different events. Individually, sophomore Michaela Schaffer (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) won the triple jump with a leap of 9.99 meters (32' 9.5"), while the 4x400-meter relay of sophomore Hannah Cluck (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City), first-year student Kelsea Greenthal (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell), junior Deanna Zoch (Nassau, N.Y./Columbia) and senior Aislyn McDonough (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) clocked a first-place time of 4:33.75 and the 1,600 sprint medley relay quartet of Zoch, Greenthal, Cluck and McDonough posted a first-place standard of 4:35.42.
 
Second-place finishes came from Schaffer in the long jump (4.72 meters – 15' 6"), first-year student Angelina Lyons (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) in the triple jump (9.78 meters – 32' 1"), senior Kaitlyn Bjelko (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) in the shot put (11.29 meters – 37' 0.5") and junior Jasmine Piper (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) in the weight throw (13.05 meters – 42' 9.75"), while third-place results came from McDonough in the 1,000-meter run (3:21.07), first-year student Lauren Purvis (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) in the mile run (6:04.17), senior Rebecca Block (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) in the 3,000-meter run and senior Kristen Boerke (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) in the high jump (1.43 meters – 4' 8.25") and long jump (4.53 meters – 14' 10.5").
 
Plattsburgh State has more than a month off from competition until it returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the St. Lawrence Invitational.
