PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team hosted William Smith for the first time in program history, thumping the Herons 9-0.
The Cardinals would tally four goals in the opening period including two in a 32 second span.
Freshman
Courtney Moriarty would start the scoring, notching her seventh of the season at 7:41 into the opening frame.
Giovanna Senese would benefit from a beautiful cross ice pass by
Kayla Meneghin to setup the senior for a quick redirect on the far post.
Meneghin would then team up with her fellow sophomore line mate,
Melissa Sheeran, for two quick strikes to give the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage heading into the second period.
The Cardinals would tally another four goals in the second opening with a power play goal from Meneghin for her second of the night.
Defenseman,
Erin Brand would tally the next two for Plattsburgh State again with the second goal coming on the man advantage. Its Brand's third consecutive game with multiple points and her first career multiple goal game.
With 2:07 left in the second period, Senese would get her second of the game to make it 8-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
There would be one goal registered in the third period coming from Sheeran for her second of the game as well to give her 13 on the season and make it 9-0 Plattsburgh State.
Camille Leonard earned her fourth-straight shutout. Leonard is on a current streak of 250:38 minutes without conceding a goal. Her eight shutouts in 13 games leads all of Division III women's hockey.
Laurel Brown and Emily Spencer split time in net for the Herons as Brown earned the start making 17 saves before turning way to Spencer who made 24.
No. 1 Plattsburgh State goes to a perfect 14-0-0 (8-0-0 ECACW) while William Smith goes to 4-8-2 (1-6-2 ECACW)
The two teams will finish their weekend series Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Stafford Ice Arena.
