PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team opened the second half of its schedule against Fitchburg State in the opening round of the W.B. Mason Winter Classic, defeating the Falcons 7-0.
The Cardinals showed no rust, scoring three goals in the first period before tallying two more in both the second and third.
Freshman,
Pat Egan scored the first two goals for the Cardinals at 9:54 and 12:26 in the opening period. First Egan finished a rebound opportunity on
Brandon O'Quinn's initial shot. The Rochester, N.Y., native would collect a loose puck after a
Cam Owens wrap around attempt to beat Fitchburg State goaltender Charles Jakobsson over the glove.
Cole Stallard would make it 3-0 carrying the puck behind the net before circling to the slot for a quick wrister.
Five minutes into the second period, Owens would be the recipient of some great tic-tac-toe passing that freed the Wilmington, Mass., native for an easy tap-in on the doorstep of the crease.
O'Quinn would make it 5-0 Cardinals after putting in a rebound from an initial
Kyle Hall shot.
In the third,
Luke Baleshta grabbed his third of the season cutting through the Fitchburg defense, beating new Falcons goalie Quinn Wold.
Hall would cap of the scoring making it 7-0 with just 15 seconds left in the game for his third of the season. He followed up his own shot, jamming it by Wold.
Cardinals' goaltender
Brady Rouleau pitched an 18-save shutout for his third win of the season and improved to a 3-0-0. Jakobsson made 25 saves in the first two periods before turning it over to Wold, who made nine in the third period.
Plattsburgh State improves to 9-1-1 on the season and will face Colby for the W.B. Mason Winter Classic Championship Saturday at 7 p.m.
NAZARETH vs. COLBY: Colby knocked off Nazareth 6-4 in the opening game of the W.B. Mason Winter Classic.
Nazareth would jump out to an early 2-0 after goals by Sean de Herder and Scott Dawson.
Colby would respond with four-straight including a pair of goals by both EJ Rauseo and Jack Burton to make it 4-2.
Nazareth would claw back to bring it back within one when Justin LaCorte scored making it 4-3.
Colby would score two more making it 6-3 with goals from Devin Albert and Kai Frankville.
Nazareth would get one late from Rocky Gruttadauria to close out the 6-4 contest.
Nazareth will play Fitchburg State in the consolation game on Saturday at 4 p.m.
