CANTON, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team concluded the regular season on the road this evening, battling Canton in a SUNYAC matchup that held playoff seeding implications. Fresh off a 5-3 victory over Potsdam yesterday, the Cardinals entered the contest seeking to even the season series after falling to the Kangaroos earlier in the year.
Canton struck early, scoring in the first period on a goal from Logan Kelly to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals responded in the second period with a power-play goal from senior Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec) at the 8:35 mark. Sacratini buried a shot set up by seniors Spencer Bellina (Medina, Ohio) and Brannon Butler (Toronto, Ontario) to knot the score at 1-1.
In the third period, Canton reclaimed the lead midway through the frame when Dylan Pollock found the back of the net, putting the Kangaroos back on top, 2-1. Despite late opportunities, the Cardinals were unable to convert the equalizer. Goaltender Trey Miller stood tall in net for Canton, stopping 35 shots on the night, while first-year Beau Lane (Pembroke, Mass.) turned aside 18 in the loss.
With the loss, the Cardinals conclude the regular season at 13-12 overall and 9-9 in SUNYAC play. Plattsburgh now shifts focus to postseason action, earning the No. 6 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. The Cardinals are scheduled to face Skidmore on Wednesday in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs.
