Slow Start Haunts the Cardinals in Season Opener at RPI, 12-8

Box Score TROY, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team opened up its 2015 campaign on the road against the RPI Engineers falling 12-8.

RPI would jump out to an early 4-0 lead blanking Plattsburgh State in the opening fifteen minutes of the game including holding a 14-5 shot advantage in the first quarter.

However the Cardinals would find their grove in the opening minutes of the second quarter as five different Cardinals would score in a 3:12 span to take a 5-4 lead six minutes in.

Senior, James Read would start the scoring for Plattsburgh State scoring the first of two on the day for the midfielder.

Brandon Damm would assist on the next two goals to Austin Belz and Mike Gay before scoring a goal of his own to tie the game up at 4-4. Damm would finish the afternoon with a team-high four points on two goals and two assists.

After the tying goal, junior faceoff man Joey Kromer would win the draw and rush down the field to give the Cardinals their first lead of the contest at 5-4.

The Engineers would go on another four goal spurt to close out the first half including scoring one with just 0.5 seconds left in the second quarter to give RPI a 8-5 lead.

Read would open up the scoring again, this time in the second half to cut the RPI lead back down to two early in the third quarter.

Unfortunately, three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter by the Engineers would prove to be too much to overcome for the Cardinals in route to the 12-8 final.

Matt Massaria made his first collegiate start making 12 saves while his counterpart David Gibbs collected 14 saves for the Engineers on his way to his first victory of the season. RPI held a slight shot advantage in the game, 40-36.

Plattsburgh State drops to 0-1 with the loss while RPI moves to 1-1. The Cardinals will look to rebound as they take the field again on Wednesday at Middlebury against the Panthers at 4:30 p.m.
