POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Cardinals were able to rebound nicely Saturday afternoon in Tania Armellino's first career head coaching win, closing the North Country Classic with a 3-0 victory over Clarkson University.

Plattsburgh State (1-1-0) was able to find the back of the net three times after failing to score a goal in the season opener against St. Lawrence.

Freshman Lindsey Bushey started the scoring for the Cards with just 21 seconds left in the first half. The Plattsburgh, N.Y. native scored her first colligate goal on a long free kick that she sent sailing over the goalies head and into the mesh.

Plattsburgh State continued to come out aggressive in the second half. Looking to improve after leading all freshmen in points last year, Vicky Scott was able to send the Cardinals up 2-0.

Freshman Sarah Haight was able to deliver a pass through the Golden Knights defense and onto the foot of Scott. The forward Scott was then able to do what she does best beating the keeper for her fifth career goal.

The scoring wasn't done there either. Junior midfield Cassidy Clavet joined the action just seven minutes later. Clavet struck the ball from 25 yards out to beat senior goalie Kim Kenline for the third time and put Plattsburgh State up 3-0.

Clarkson fell to 1-1-0 after defeating Colby-Sawyer 1-0 in double overtime in its first game of the North Country Classic. Both Plattsburgh State and Clarkson finished the classic with a win and a loss each.

The Cardinals outshot Clarkson 18-12 on the day and 11-6 in the second half. Danielle Schmitt played 84 minutes, allowing no goals and six saves. The senior goalkeeper finished her opening weekend allowing a lone goal and capturing 13 saves in two games.

Bushey, Clavet and Mercedes Kendall were all named to the North Country Classic All-Tournament team.

Plattsburgh State will return to action this Wednesday night for its home opener at 7 p.m. against SUNY Canton. The game will be located at the Plattsburgh High School soccer field.
