Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team didn't get the result it was looking for to start the 2014 campaign, losing 1-0 to St. Lawrence in the North Country Classic.
Freshmen Katie Stames scored her first collegiate goal on Friday afternoon, which proved to be all the Saints needed. Stames found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Taylor Goldsborough.
Goldsborough sent a diagonal pass connecting with Stames on the top of the box where the Morrisville, Vermont native one-timed it past Cardinals goaltender Danielle Schmitt. Schmitt hauled in seven saves on the day.
Plattsburgh State was able to get two corner kicks at the end of the first half to gather some momentum going into the locker room. After only registering one shot in the first half the Cardinals were able to generate five in the second half. Plattsburgh State again closed out the half strong getting two more corner kicks in the 86
th and 87
th minute but was unable to get anything by junior goalkeeper Kelsey West who finished the day with a clean sheet.
The Cardinals finished the day with six shots compared to the Saints' 17. Lindsey Bushey landed the lone shot on goal for Plattsburgh State.
Plattsburgh State returns to action tomorrow against Clarkson in Potsdam, N.Y., at 3:30 p.m. to wrap up the North Country Classic.
