Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – For the second-straight outing, the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team watched a lead slip away as the Cardinals suffered an 8-7 loss at SUNY Potsdam in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Wednesday night at the Maxcy Turf Field.
Despite outshooting the Bears by a sizeable 45-19 margin, the Cardinals were never able to pull away from the home team as Potsdam goalie Ryan Duffy made a career-high 19 saves.
Tim Lawrence put Plattsburgh State on the board with an unassisted goal at the 9:45 mark of the first quarter but Potsdam responded with a man-up goal from Pat Bonafede at 6:18. Brendan Damm gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead with 3:14 left in the opening stanza with his league-leading 34
th goal of the season before Potsdam's Rob Kunz and Plattsburgh State's Jack Felter scored in the final minutes to make it a 3-2 game at the end of one.
Potsdam opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals to give the Bears their first lead of the evening but Plattsburgh State took a 5-4 lead into halftime after Felter's second of the game and James Read's 15
th of the year.
Shortly after the Bears tied it up on Jon Woodworth's goal, Anthony Pafundi converted an extra-man opportunity with 6:02 remaining in the third to give the Cardinals a 6-5 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Bears scored the next three, putting Plattsburgh State down by two with a little over six minutes to play. With 3:16 left on the clock, Lawrence's second goal of the goal brought the Cardinals within one, but a late penalty on Plattsburgh State hindered its chances to score the equalizer.
Lawrence finished the night with two goals and an assist. Damm added a goal and two assists while Felter continued his strong play of late with a pair of goals. Read and Pafundi each scored a goal and Andrew Tralongo pitched in with an assist.
Sophomore Joey Kromer stepped in for an injured Joe Eiseman at the X, winning 8-of-19 face-offs. Kromer, Lawrence and Matt Renko each picked up a team-high four ground balls. Senior Charlie Dullea finished with two caused turnovers for the Cardinals.
Andrew Hauk stopped three shots in the loss for the Cardinals, bringing his record to 8-4 on the year.
Kunz led the Bears with a goal and three assists. Berkley Stone and Matt Kennedy chipped in two goals apiece while Matt Moran added two assists. Midfielder Ryan McConnell had a game-high seven ground balls.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State drops to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam improves to 7-3, with a 1-1 record against conference opponents.
The Cardinals returning home Saturday looking to snap the two-game skid in a SUNYAC contest against Oswego State. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Field House Turf Complex.
