Seniors Lead Plattsburgh State to 18-11 Win over Brockport on Senior Day

Senior Tim Lawrence matched a career-high with nine points in Saturday's victory over Brockport.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – On a day in which the Cardinals honored their 12 seniors, the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team handed Brockport an 18-11 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at the Field House Turf Complex. With the win, Plattsburgh State finishes the regular season at 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
 
A pair of seniors wasted no time getting the Cardinals on the board as Anthony Pafundi scored his first of the game from Tim Lawrence at the 13:34 mark of the first quarter. Another senior, Robbie Ashlaw, added a man-up goal a little over a minute later to give Plattsburgh State a quick 2-0 advantage. The Cardinals get pouring on the offense with goals from Cole Andersen, Brendan Damm and two from Jack Felter to make it a 6-0 game after one quarter.
 
Brockport (4-9, 1-5 SUNYAC) took a pair of penalties early in the second quarter to give Plattsburgh State a two-man advantage and Pafundi made the Golden Eagles pay, scoring his second of the game at 12:58. The Golden Eagles scored the next two, cutting the Cardinals lead to 7-2, before the home team kicked it back into gear. Lawrence scored his first of the day at the 6:20 before Pafundi scored another man-up goal to complete the hat trick. Felter added one more late in the quarter to give Plattsburgh State a 10-2 lead at the half.
 
The senior class continued to carry the Cardinals early in the second half with Tom Duggan opening the third quarter with a man-up goal for his 21st of the year. Felter scored his hat-trick goal at the 9:41 mark before the Golden Eagles got goals from Justin Cook and Riley Austin, but Ashlaw kept the Cardinals in control with his second of the game with 1:25 left in the third.
 
Plattsburgh State senior Erik Howard replaced fellow senior Andrew Hauk in goal to start the fourth quarter and Brockport took of advantage of the switch by scoring two quick goals. The Cardinals quickly regained the momentum as Lawrence rattled off the next four goals to extend the Plattsburgh State lead to 17-6.
 
The Golden Eagles made a late surge, scoring five goals in the final six minutes, but Plattsburgh State's Mitchell LaBianca added one more for good measure late in game to reach the 18-11 final.
 
Lawrence put on a show in his final regular season game, scoring five goals and four assists to match a career-high nine points. Felter contributed four goals and three assists while Damm added five points. Ashlaw tallied four points and Pafundi finished the day with three goals. Joey Kromer won 19 faceoffs and picked up a game-high eight ground balls.
Brockport's offense was a balanced attack on the afternoon with Jake Giudice, Alex Austin, Steve Brissette and Riley Austin each scoring three points.
 
Hauk earned the victory for the Cardinals, allowing four goals and making four saves. Fellow seniors Howard and Mantovani each recorded a save in the fourth quarter for Plattsburgh State.
 
Shane Hutchins took the loss for the Golden Eagles, giving up eight goals on 14 shots. Starting goalie Conor Nowak made one save and Alex Shoemaker recorded four stops.
 
Plattsburgh State now turns its attention to the postseason as the Cardinals will enter the SUNYAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Cardinals, who are making their third straight appearance in the conference tournament, will travel to second-seeded Potsdam for a SUNYAC Semifinal matchup on Wednesday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
