Men's Lacrosse Dismantles Oneonta, 22-4, to Clinch Third Seed in the SUNYAC

Robbie Ashlaw scored five goals and three assists to lead the Cardinals to a 22-4 win over Oneonta on Wednesday.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Tim Lawrence hit a milestone and Robbie Ashlaw scored eight points as the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team defeated SUNY Oneonta in dominating fashion, 22-4, and clinched the third seed in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament.
 
The game was a lopsided affair right from the start as the Cardinals held a 7-0 lead after one quarter and a 14-2 advantage at the half. Ashlaw tallied a hat trick in the first quarter while goals from Jack Felter, Matt Renko, Brendan Damm and James Read also added goals in the first to give Plattsburgh State the early seven-goal cushion.
 
Ashlaw opened up the second quarter with his fourth of the game before Lawrence made it 9-0 at the 12:06 mark. The Red Dragons were finally able to get on the board at the 11:33 mark of the second with an unassisted goal by Connor Coyle to make it 9-1.
 
With 9:48 left in the half, Lawrence scored his 100th career goal on an extra-man opportunity with an assist from Ashlaw to put the Cardinals in double-digits. Lawrence becomes the fifth player in program history to hit the benchmark, joining Kyle Norchi, Frank Sangiovanni, Luke Weidlein and Joey Kramer.
 
Damm followed with his second of the game at the 6:51 mark before Lawrence completed his hat trick with 5:00 left in the second. Cole Andersen and Ashlaw rounded out the Cardinals' offense in the first half before Oneonta's Daniel Stern buried one with seven seconds left in the half.
 
The Cardinals remained relentless in the third, opening the quarter with four straight goals. Coyle closed out the frame with his second goal of the evening and Oneonta's third of the game as Plattsburgh State took an 18-3 lead into the final quarter.
 
Plattsburgh State started to empty the bench in the latter portion of the game. Collin Cunningham scored his first collegiate goal with 59 seconds gone in the fourth before James Higgins and Mitchell LaBianca joined the party for the Cardinals to stretch the lead to 21-3. Nick DeCeglia added his first collegiate marker with 6:20 left in the game to put the finishing touches on the largest margin of victory for the Cardinals against Oneonta.
 
Ashlaw finished the day with five goals and three assists while Lawrence, Damm and Felter added four points apiece. Joey Kromer won 16-of-25 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls.
 
Coyle led the Oneonta offense with two goals and an assist.
 
Andrew Hauk made four saves for Plattsburgh State to earn the win. Erik Howard, Joe Mantovani and Matt Massaria all saw action in the Cardinals' net with Howard recording three stops.
 
Oneonta's Zach Reilly took the loss with two saves and 13 goals allowed. Kevin Fitzpatrick made seven saves while Justin Benigno stopped two shots for the Red Dragons.
 
The Cardinals outshot the Red Dragons by a 48-32 margin and held a 43-21 edge in ground balls. Plattsburgh State went 1-for-6 with the extra man while Oneonta was held scoreless in its one extra-man opportunity.
 
With the win, Plattsburgh State improves to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Oneonta drops to 4-10 on the year and 2-3 in the SUNYAC.
 
Around the league, Cortland wrapped up the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play to claim the top seed while Potsdam defeated Oswego State, 10-6, Wednesday afternoon to clinch the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Geneseo and Oneonta will enter the final day of the regular season tied for fourth.
 
Plattsburgh State has one game remaining in the regular season before turning its attention to the postseason. The Cardinals will host Brockport on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Field House Turf Complex.
