Damm's Hat Trick not Enough as Cardinals Fall to Conn. College 8-7

Robbie Ashlaw amassed four points (1G, 3A) for the Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon.
Box Score ARNOLD, Md. – A hat trick from sophomore Brendan Damm and another four points by Robbie Ashlaw were not enough to propel the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team to a win as the Cardinals dropped an 8-7 non-conference decision to Connecticut College at Anne Arundel Community College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Camels' Tyler Hagerty scored a game-high four goals - the last of which proved to be the game winner - to lead Conn. College to the win.

It is just the second setback of the 2014 campaign for the Cardinals, who drop to 5-2. Connecticut College sees its record rise to 4-2 thanks to the Camels' second one-goal triumph of the season.

Reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week Brendan Damm opened the scoring by pumping in his conference-leading 14th goal of the season 7:28 into the first period. The sophomore was on the receiving end of a quick pass from James Read who notched his second assist of 2014.

With 2:24 to go in the opening frame, Hegerty slung in the equalizer for the Camels by firing a hard shot past defending SUNYAC Goalie of the Week Andrew Hauk from inside the circle.

Pressing their attack to begin the second period, the Cardinals were rewarded with a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the frame. Just 36 seconds had elapsed before Robbie Ashlaw found James Higgins for Plattsburgh State's second score of the tilt.

Ashlaw netted his only goal of the contest when his man-up marker from inside the circle beat Bobby Bleistein to make matters 3-1.

Plattsburgh State's largest lead of the game didn't last long, however, as Chad Sawyer ripped a pair of goals past Hauk to deadlock the score at three each at the halftime break.

Tom Duggan handed the Cardinals their final lead of the game when his eight score of the season made it a 4-3 game near the halfway points of the third period.

In a 41-second span, the Camels were able to secure their first lead of the non-conference bout when Thomas Woessner and Hegerty each launched a man-up goal past Hauk. With 1:42 to go in the third, Damm wound up and blasted his second score of the game past Bleistein to produce the final tie score of the game, 5-5, before the fourth period got underway.

The Camels scored a trio of unanswered goals in the first 7:22 of the final period to take an 8-5 lead, but Damm retaliated with his third of the game before Read added another even-strength score to pull the Plattsburgh State within 8-7 with 2:53 to go.

Through the final stretch, the Cardinals got off a trio of shots, but couldn't get the equalizer to the back of the Connecticut College net.

Hauk (5-2) made five saves in the loss while Bleistien stopped nine shots for the Camels. The Cardinals held a slim 31-29 edge in shots and won 10-of-18 face-offs. Connecticut College finished 2-for-7 on man-up opportunities while Plattsburgh State was 1-for-3.

Joe Eiseman gathered up a game-high five ground balls for the Cardinals and won 10 of his 17 face-off opportunities.

The Cardinals aim to put the wraps on their spring break slate of games with a triumph as they head to Scranton, Pa., to tangle with the University of Scranton (4-2) on Saturday afternoon. The non-conference clash is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
