Women’s Hockey Grinds out 5-4 Victory over Manhattanville

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team picked up where they left off last season, with a win as they defeated Manhattanville 5-4 Saturday night.
 
The Cardinals started the scoring as freshman Melissa Sheeran notched the first goal of the game 7:05 into the first period, Giovanna Senese assisted on the goal.
 
However Manhattanville would exit the first period with the lead as they scored two to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Sydney Asselstine and Melissa Hauptman each scored power play goals at the end of the first period for the Valiants.
 
Plattsburgh would dominate the second as they out scored Manhattanville 3-0 in the middle frame.
 
Senior Shannon Stewart scored 4:04 into the second with an assist from Bridget Balisy.
 
39 seconds left freshman Kayla Meneghin would give the Cards the lead for good as Plattsburgh would take a 3-2 lead.
 
Later in the second Jordan Lipson would scored a short-handed goal to put the Cardinals up 4-2, 9:55 into the second stanza.
 
The Cardinals would score four-straight as Stewart would tally her second of the game and the eventual game-winner on a Andrea Ziesmann assist.
 
Manhattanville wouldn't go down quietly however, as they tallied the last two goals in the third period. Aubrey Bachand and Michele Meggiolaro would score another two power play goals for the Valiants.
 
Manhattanville would finish the evening 4-5 on the power play while the Cardinals went 1-3.
 
Cardinals' goaltender Ally Ross picked up 13 saves in the win while Valiant's goalie Kristen Shaughnes racked up 26 saves in the losing effort.
 
Plattsburgh gets right back to work Sunday as the #1 Cardinals face #2 Norwich Cadets in their home arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
