PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The defending 2013-14 women's ice hockey champions looked in peak performance as the Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team defeated the Ontario Hockey Academy 10-0 in an exhibition match Saturday evening.
It was a slow start for the Cardinals as they only tallied one goal in the first period before scoring three in the second and erupting for six in the third.
Plattsburgh's first goal was produced by Melissa Ames from Katelyn Turk and Andrea Ziesmann.
Shannon Stewart would rattle home a power play goal from Bridget Balisy and Melissa Sheeran to start the scoring for the Cardinals in the second period.
Kayla Meneghin from Giovanna Senese and Sheeran would give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
Ames would score her second goal of the game, this time on the power play coming from Mia Favretto and Meneghin before the end of the second period.
The Cardinals came out flying in the third as Sheeran scored a mere 44 seconds into the period assisted by Meneghin and Senese.
Senese from Balisy on the power play put the Cardinals up 6-0.
Balisy would finally join the scoring when she deflected a shot in from Jordan Lipson, Stewart would pick up the secondary assist on the goal.
Morgan MacInnis from Turk gave the Cardinals an 8-0 advantage halfway through the third.
Freshman Oliva Fox scored the ninth goal for Plattsburgh burying a pass from Brett Campbell.
Senese would tally her second with just 28 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Cardinals a 10-0 advantage.
The Cardinals will open the regular season on the road next Saturday on the road in the Norwich East/West Classic as they are matched up against Manhattanville at 5 p.m.
