Cardinals stumble to Oneonta, 3-0

Chaparro had team high three shots Saturday against Oneonta
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team struggled to get things going against the fifth ranked Oneonta Red Dragons, falling 3-0.

After Plattsburgh reeled off two straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) wins, Oneonta came into town and put a halt to the idea of a third-straight victory.

The Cardinals put themselves in a hole early that proved too overwhelming to escape as Oneonta scored all three of its goals in the first 21 minutes.

Mitchell Cain started the scoring for the Red Dragons eight minutes into the game when he received a pass from Jake Sutherland in the middle of the box. Sutherland danced around a defender on the goal line before finding Cain who was able to settle the pass and rip a shot over a diving Mitchell Jordan going bar down and in.

Seven minutes later Oneonta would strike again as Dylan Williams scored his fifth of the season to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead. SUNYAC offensive player of the week, Hans Purtell, set-up the goal when he tossed a pass to an open Williams in the middle of the 18 yard box. Williams gathered and buried the ball into the left side of the net.

The scoring would be capped off in the 21st minute when Purtell and Williams flipped roles giving Purtell his fifth tally of the season. Williams sent a pass over the top of the defense that connected with Purtell that touched it forward and before beating Jordan for a 3-0 Red Dragon lead.

The final 69 minutes would be scoreless as the Cardinals were unable to crack senior goalkeeper Vincent Pellegrino and get on the scoreboard. Oneonta owned a 9-8 shot advantage and a 5-4 corner kick edge.

On the weekend Plattsburgh went 1-1-0 in SUNYAC play and sees its record go to 7-6-1 (2-3-0 SUNYAC). With the victory Oneonta remains unbeaten this season as they improve to 11-0-2 (5-0-1 SUNYAC).

The Cardinals will try to get back in the win column as they hit the road to take on two SUNYAC foes Friday and Saturday against Fredonia and Brockport respectively.
