Women’s Soccer Road Struggles Continue, fall 2-0 at New Paltz

Madeline Saccocio fired five shots against New Paltz Friday evening in the defeat.
Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team drop its opening match of the weekend Friday evening on the road to New Paltz, 2-0.

The Cardinals fell behind early as Bryce Kristall scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick. Kristina Gandolfo sent a ball into the box that was one touched by Kristall to beat Cardinals goalkeeper Danielle Schmitt.

Plattsburgh State would provide the pressure all match but couldn't solve Hawks goalkeeper Katelyn Cordero. The freshman made seven saves in the night earning her fourth shutout of the season.

The Cardinals best opportunity in the first half came from the boot of Cassidy Clavet who sent a shot that tagged the crossbar in the 26th minute.

In traditional fashion this year the Cardinals came out flying in the second half generating eight shots in the first 20 minutes of the second stanza. But it all was to no avail as Madeleine Rattray picked up a red card in the 90th minute that allowed senior midfielder Eleni Anselmi to sink a penalty kick to put the Hawks up 2-0 and squander any comeback attempt the Cardinals may have had.

Even though the Cardinals outshot the Hawks 19-15 and owned a 7-4 corner kick advantage they were blanked on the scoreboard. Schmitt collected four saves in the losing effort.

With the loss the Cardinals suffered their first SUNYAC defeat and dropped to 6-4-1 (2-1-1 SUNYAC). The win was New Paltz's first conference win and moves them to 7-5-2 (1-2-2 SUNYAC).

The Cardinals have now lost their past three road games and are 2-4-0 on the road including a win over RPI were they were outshot on goal 6-1. Plattsburgh State will look to conquer its road blemishes Saturday against the Oneonta Red Dragons in a critical SUNYAC game.
