Balisy, Stewart Lead Women's Hockey to 4-1 Victory against Manhattanville

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Bridget Balisy and Shannon Stewart combined for five points as the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team kept rolling with a 4-1 win over Manhattanville in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena.
 
Stewart got things started for the Cardinals with her team-leading 10th of the year at the 13:57 mark of the first off assists from Tyne Gove and Morgan MacInnis to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead after one period.
 
Balisy made it 2-0 in favor of the home team with just 1:43 gone in the second, taking a feed from Jenny Kistner and lifting a shot over the shoulder of Manhattanville goaltender Dana DeMartino.
 
The Valiants cut their deficit in half at the 3:35 mark of the second when Alla Traun picked up the puck in the slot and sent a shot through the five-hole of Plattsburgh State goaltender Sydney Aveson. Manhattanville's Sydney Asselstin and Michele Meggioiaro were credited with assists on the Valiants lone goal of the afternoon.
 
The Cardinals added a goal late in the second on Balisy's second of the afternoon. Jordan Caldwell worked the puck away from the board and sent a cross-ice pass to Stewart before Balisy tipped it in from in close with 1:37 left in the middle stanza.
 
Andrea Ziesmann gave Plattsburgh State a three-goal lead at 11:39 of the third period on a shot from the left point to round out the scoring. Stewart chipped in an assist on Ziesmann's second of the year, giving Stewart a goal and two assists on the afternoon.
 
Plattsburgh State outshot Manhattanville, 38-11, while both sides went 0-for-4 on the power play. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 11-0-1 on the year. The Valiants drop to 6-6-1.
 
Aveson recorded 10 saves to earn her ninth victory for the Cardinals. DeMartino made 34 stops in the loss for Manhattanville.
 
The Cardinals hit the road Tuesday for a non-conference game at Williams before returning home next weekend for a conference series against Cortland. Tuesday matchup at Williams is set for 7 p.m.
