POTSDAM, N.Y. – It was another tough-luck kind of day for the Plattsburgh State volleyball team, as the Cardinals (1-6) were on the losing end of their final two games at the Victory Promotions Invitational hosted by SUNY Potsdam.
MATCH ONE: St. Michael's 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20)
A tough St. Michael's team lurked as the Cardinals' first opponent of the day, and the Purple Knights hit .667 as a team to take the match in four sets.
Down 1-0 after a 25-21 defeat in the first set, Plattsburgh State battled back to tie the match at one set each with a 25-19 victory in the second frame.
Although they hung tough with St. Michael's in the third and fourth sets, the offensive potency of the NCAA Division II squad was too much for the Cardinals to handle as they fell 25-17 in the third set and 25-20 in the fourth.
Rosi Cummings once again led the charge on offense for the Cardinals. The Plattsburgh, N.Y., product finished with 13 kills, eight digs and a pair of block assists. Junior Maggie Schrantz entered double-digit territory in the kills department with 10 and completed her double-double with 10 digs.
Kristen Marchisatto passed out a team-high 18 assists while junior teammate Meghan Clifford added 17.
Candace Washington had 11 kills to lead St. Michael's (2-1).
MATCH TWO: Clarkson 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-13, 25-6, 25-11)
Drained from their four-set defeat at the hands of the Purple Knights earlier in the day, the Cardinals had almost no answers for the strong offense of the Golden Knights.
Playing without Cummings, the Cardinals found it extremely difficult to get things going on offense. Freshman Emily Miller led the squad with six kills while Schrantz added four. Marchisatto and Clifford finished with seven and six assists respectively.
As a team, the Cardinals hit -.027 compared to a .299 percentage by the Golden Knights. Adrienne Walker led Clarkson with six kills on seven attempts (.714 attack percentage), a solo block and a pair of block assists.
After spending their first two weeks of the season on the road, the Cardinals will make their 2013 Memorial Hall debut on Tuesday when they face off against SUNY Canton. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
