POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – An early goal by Vassar proved to be the only offense of the day as the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team found itself on the wrong end of a 1-0 non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at Gordon Field.
Outshot 21-8 in the tilt, the Cardinals drop to 1-4-1 while the Brewers saw their 2013 mark rise to 3-2-1.
Senior midfielder Emily LaLone attempted a pair of corner kicks for Plattsburgh State in the first 7:43 of the match before Vassar came up with the only offense of the day.
Kelsey Hamm sent a deep pass to Chloe Wheeler, who fired the ball past Plattsburgh State keeper Charisse Abellard with a well-timed header. The goal at the 9:07 mark was Wheeler's fifth of the season.
Taylor Florio broke through Vassar's back line and registered Plattsburgh State's first shot on goal of the afternoon at the 33:52 mark of the bout. Florio's scoring attempt was the Cardinals' only shot of the first 45 minutes.
The best scoring chance of the afternoon for Plattsburgh State occurred in the closing minutes of the game. Early in the 88th minute, sophomore Melissa Rodriguez set up for a corner kick and the ball found its way to the foot of senior Lauren Gonyea. The Plattsburgh, N.Y., native fired a hard shot at the Vassar net, but it was turned aside by Stephanie Tapolsky.
Plattsburgh State beat out the Brewers in terms of corner kicks (4-3), and registered three shots on goal compared to six by Vassar. Abellard (1-3-1) tied a career-high with five saves in the setback while Emma Nichols improved to 3-1 and made a single save in 45 minutes of action.
Sophomore Cassidy Clavet took a team-high four shots, one of which was on goal.
With just two non-SUNYAC games remaining on their 2013 schedule, the Cardinals will make their return to the Field House Soccer Complex on Saturday to do battle against Liberty League nemesis Skidmore. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
