NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Of the three goals scored in a nine-minute stretch during the second half, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team was only able to account for one of them as the Cardinals fell to non-conference antagonist Mount Saint Mary 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Cardinals slip to 1-3-1 while the Knights improve to 1-3 with their first victory of the season.
Plattsburgh State wasted little time before sending a shot at Mount Saint Mary keeper Jacquelyn Mancini. Sopohmore Melissa Rodriguez was charged with the first shot of the game a little less than four minutes into the bout.
The Cardinals kept up their aggressive brand of offense throughout the first half, taking six total shots through the 45-minute frame. Although five of those opportunities tested Mancini, neither one was able to get to the back of the net.
Senior Emily LaLone found herself situated just outside the 18-yard box for another free kick late in the ninth minute of action, but the midfielder's scoring free kick sailed over the top of the goal.
A new half also meant a new netminders for each team. Junior Kristy Kirkpatrick made her Plattsburgh State debut at the beginning of the second half while Abigail McQuillen was assigned to protect the Knights' net for the final frame.
Less than five minutes into the half, Mount Saint Mary's Shanice Robe gave the home team a 1-0 lead when her shot to the far post beat Kirkpatrick.
With 8:15 elapsed in the second frame, Robe pumped in her second score of the day. The game-winning tally deflected off of Kirkpatrick before finding the back of the net. Vanessa DiSilvio assisted on both of the Mount Saint Mary goals.
Late in the 54th minute, Rodriguez carved the Knights' lead in half when she pounded in her first goal of the season. The recipient of a fine pass off the foot of Devin McMahon, Rodriguez came down the right side and made it a 2-1 game with a strong finish.
From there, the Mount Saint Mary defensive unit clamped down and didn't allow another Plattsburgh State shot on goal until LaLone fired a pair of shots at McQuillen in the final 10 minutes of the match.
LaLone and Rodriguez finished with two shots on goal each to lead the way for the Cardinals. Kirkpatrick (0-1) made four saves in the second half.
Robe took seven shots in the game, four of which were on target. McQuillen earned the win and made two saves in the deciding half. Mount Saint Mary outshot the Cardinals 18-11, but Plattsburgh State held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cardinals will conclude their weekend away from the North Country with a rare Sunday match at Vassar College. Plattsburgh State will face off against the Brewers at 1 p.m.
