Cardinals Blanked by Colby-Sawyer, 2-0, in 2013 Opener

Freshman Diana DiCocco put two of her three shots on goal for the Cardinals on Friday.
Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – Scoring chances were hard to come by for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team as the Cardinals dropped their 2013 season opener at Colby-Sawyer by a 2-0 tally.

The best offensive opportunity the Cardinals earned in the first half of action came at the 24:59 mark when sophomore Devin McMahon attempted the only Plattsburgh State corner kick of the frame.

Colby-Sawyer received all the offense it would need when Rachel Quaye pumped in her first goal of the 2013 campaign 31:05 into the contest. Morgan Eckstrom snuck a pass through the Plattsburgh State defensive line and found Quaye sprinting toward Charisse Abellard's goal uncontested.

In her first game at the collegiate level, freshman Diana DiCocco led the charge on the offensive side of the field for the Cardinals. The Schenectady, N.Y., product tested Colby-Sawyer keeper Karley Hamilton for the first time in the tilt by taking the Cardinals' first shot on goal three-and-a-half minutes into the second 45-minute frame.

A little over three minutes later, Sarah Little picked off an errant Plattsburgh State pass and gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead with a blast into the upper corner of Abellard's net.

Freshmen Heather Marko and Kylie Wallace tried to pull the Cardinals closer by sending strong shots at Hamilton in the later stages of the second half, but neither attempt could produce a score.

DiCocco accounted for three of the Cardinals' six shots which included two of the four Plattsburgh State shots on goal.

Abellard (0-1-0) gave up two goals on five shots while her Colby-Sawyer counterpart saved all four shots she faced during the bout.

Colby-Sawyer outpaced the Cardinals in the corner kick department six to four.

The Cardinals will try to even their 2013 record on Saturday when they head to Nashua, N.H., to take on Rivier College. The non-conference battle is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
