Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team scored four runs in the eighth inning to pull out an 8-4 extra inning win over Union College in the second game of a softball doubleheader at Alexander Field Tuesday. The Cardinals won the opener over the host Dutchwomen, 2-0.
Plattsburgh State improved to 14-10 overall and Union is now 6-15 after the non-league doubleheader.
Game One: Plattsburgh State 2, Union 0
Ashley Marshall dominated in the opener, earning a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts. She surrendered four hits and one walk.
Brittany Marshall led off the game with a double to right-center field before coming around to score on a throwing error by Union shortstop Samantha Chevalier later in the inning to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Plattsburgh State added another run in the third on an RBI single by Brianna Clarke.
Kristine Gay added two hits and a double by Megan Price accounted for the Cardinals’ fifth hit of the game.
Union’s Allyson Staats took the loss, allowing one earned run on five hits while walking one and striking out nine through seven innings.
Game Two: Plattsburgh State 8, Union 4 (8 inn.)
Plattsburgh State took advantage of three Union errors in game two, scoring five unearned runs in a 8-4 win in extra innings.
After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals grabbed the lead in the fourth on an RBI triple by Megan Price. Michelle Iannone, who reached on an error, came around to score on the two-out hit.
Cardinals’ starter Sam Moss retired the first Union batter in the bottom of the fifth but a walk and a single to center put runners on the corners, marking the end of Moss’ outing. Ashley Marshall stepped in to relieve Moss, allowing both inherited runners to score and give Union a 2-1 lead after five.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Price and Emily McDonagh in the top of the sixth gave the Cardinals a 3-2 edge before Plattsburgh State added another run in the top of the seventh when Kerry McCarty scored on a ground out by Kristin Nabor.
Ashley Marshall was unable to close it out in the seventh, letting the two-run cushion slip away on a pair of RBI singles by Union’s Samantha Chevalier and Joanna Chalifoux, sending the game to extra-innings tied at 4-4.
A two-out single by Emily Sharlow allowed Clarke to score the go-ahead run for the Cardinals in the top of the eighth. A fielding error Union’s Lindsay Cohen allowed Kristine Gay to reach base and keep the inning going for Plattsburgh State. The Cardinals seized the chance to add some insurance on consecutive RBI doubles by Samantha Tenney and Kerry McCarty to reach the 8-4 final.
Union finished with 13 hits while the Cardinals had 11 – six of which were for extra-bases. Plattsburgh’s Price and Tenney each had two hits and two RBIs. Gay also went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Marshall earned the win to improve to 12-4 on the year. She scattered seven hits, gave up two runs and fanned three in 3.2 innings of work. Moss allowed six hits and two runs through 4.1 innings.
Union starter Alyssa Wolejko was tagged for eight runs, three of which were earned, in the loss. She allowed 11 hits and struck out five.
