PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State softball team split a SUNYAC doubleheader against Potsdam, earning a 2-1 walk-off victory in game one before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Cardinals used timely hitting late to secure the win. Potsdam struck first in the fourth inning on a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead.
Plattsburgh answered in the fifth inning, loading the bases before junior Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was hit by a pitch to bring home first-year Jordin Radley (Chatham, N.Y./Chatham Central) and tie the game at 1-1.
The Cardinals completed the comeback in the seventh inning. Isaacs delivered in the clutch again, lining an RBI single through the left side to score first-year Allison Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and give Plattsburgh a 2-1 walk-off victory.
In game two, Potsdam jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with a two-run home run to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Bears added an insurance run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
Plattsburgh mounted a late rally in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) tripled down the right-field line to score senior Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and put the Cardinals on the board. Isaacs followed with another RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the comeback fell just short as Potsdam held on for the win.
With the split, the Cardinals move to 13-16 overall and 7-7 in SUNYAC play. Plattsburgh will return to action Wednesday for a non-conference home doubleheader against Saint Michael's.
