Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Errors haunted the Plattsburgh State softball team Sunday as the Cardinals dropped two games at the Union Round Robin in the final day of the regular season. Plattsburgh State suffered a 6-4 loss to to Ithaca in the first game, before losing 6-2 in the final game against Union.
In game one, Ithaca (22-14) opened the bottom half of the first inning with four straight singles to score two quick runs. Later in the inning, a bases-loaded walk gave the Bombers a 3-0 lead on the Cardinals.
A two-run double from Megan Price in the top of the fourth put Plattsburgh State (22-14) on the board before Sam Capobianco launched a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead.
A fielding error by the Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh allowed Ithaca's lead-off hitter to reach base. The Bombers followed with a single to left field, setting up Jennifer Biondi, who hit a three-run walk-off home run to give Ithaca the 6-4 victory. Biondi drove in four of the Bombers' six runs in the win.
Capobianco and Brianne Clarke each contributed two hits for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State's Ashley Marshall suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits. Marshall walked on and struck out eight.
Ithaca's Allison Macari gave up four runs and six hits through the first 3.2 innings. Laura Quicker earned the win, limiting the Cardinals to three hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Three costly errors by the Cardinals in game two led to a 6-2 loss to Union. The Dutchwomen, who were the designated visiting team, capitalized a Plattsburgh State fielding error in the top of the first inning to score their first run. A two-out single later in the inning allowed another unearned run to score, putting the Cardinals in a 2-0 hole.
After a two-run single by Plattsburgh State's Emily McDonagh evened the score in the bottom of the third, the game remained tied until two more errors by the Cardinals led to a four-run seventh inning for Union.
Union's Alyssa Wolejko drove in a pair of runs while Allyson Staats had two hits and scored two runs.
Clarke, Capobianco and Nicole Milano each contributed two hits for the Cardinals.
Kristin Fisher got the nod for the Cardinals and was tagged the loss despite not allowing an earned run. Fisher surrender seven hits and struck out two in 6.2 innings. Morgan Anderson came in to face one batter and record the final out for Plattsburgh State.
The Dutchwomen (16-21) used three pitchers to get the win, starting with Wolejko, who pitched two scoreless inning and struck out four. Sarah Logan allowed to runs on five hits in two innnings of work while Staats was credited with the win after tossing three perfect innings.
The Cardinals will now turn their focus to the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament, which begins Thursday at Brockport. The defending conference champions will enter this year's tournament at the third seed and will face fourth-seeded Geneseo at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
