Michelle Iannone went 4 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored in game two for the Cardinals.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y.  – Ashley Marshall struck out a combined 28 batters to earn two wins for the Plattsburgh State softball team in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at Potsdam Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals improve to 19-11 on the year and 9-5 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam drops to 7-17 overall and 1-13 against league opponents.

Game One: Plattsburgh State 6, Potsdam 4
The Cardinals let a 4-0 lead slip away in the bottom of the sixth inning, but two runs in the top of the seventh gave Plattsburgh State a 6-4 victory in front end of the league doubleheader at Potsdam.

Game one was suspended on Saturday after a scoreless first inning due to snow and rain. The game resumed Sunday in the top of the second inning.

After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals broke through in the top of the fourth on Kerry McCarty’s RBI double to left center. McCarty came around to the score later in the inning on an error by the Potsdam shortstop, giving Plattsburgh State a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the fifth for Samantha Tenney, who added to the lead with an RBI single to center field. Plattsburgh State tacked on one more run in the inning on a fielder’s choice by McCarty, making it 4-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

Potsdam pitcher Ashley Thayer helped her own cause in the sixth with a two-run triple to bring the Bears within two. Thayer crossed the plate on a groundout before an RBI single by Brittany Thivierge knotted the score at 4-4.

Plattsburgh State regained the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Marshall.

McCarty went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Marshall knocked in two runs. Kristine Gay, Brianna Clarke, Sam Capobianco and Tenney all singled in the win. Kristin Nabor also drew three walks.

Ashley Marshall went the distance for the Cardinals, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Marshall struck out 14 to eclipse 200 strikeouts for the second straight season.

Game Two: Plattsburgh State 6, Potsdam 5 (10 inn.)
Plattsburgh State rallied from a 4-0 deficit before winning a see-saw battle in extra innings and taking game two, 6-5, against the Bears in 10 innings.

Potsdam’s Ashley Thayer drilled a one-out triple to center field in the bottom of the first before Amanda Perry’s two-run home run gave the Bears a 2-0 lead. The next batter, Katie Marsman, kept the inning going with a double to center. Marsman advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on an RBI single by Brittany Thivierge to put Potsdam up by a score of 3-0.

The three quick runs by the Bears spelled the end of the afternoon for Cardinals’ starter Sam Moss. Moss allowed three runs on four hits and retired just one batter before handing the ball over to game one winner, Ashley Marshall.

Marshall’s appearance in game two marked the 127th pitching appearance of her career - a new Plattsburgh State record. The previous record of 126 career appearances was held by current Plattsburgh State Head Coach Stephanie Zweig.

The Bears added another run in the second on an RBI single by Perry, but the Cardinals started to chip away at the four-run hole in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Kerry McCarty to make it a 4-1 game.

The Cardinals added another run in the fifth when an error by Potsdam’s centerfielder allowed Michelle Iannone to come around to score and bring Plattsburgh State within two runs.

While Marshall continued to do her job in the circle, Plattsburgh State tied it up in the seventh on a two-run shot by Brianna Clarke to force extra innings.

Plattsburgh State took its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Iannone but the Bears were not done as they got the run back on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning to send the game to the 10th.

A sacrifice fly by Plattsburgh State’s Samantha Tenney allowed the winning run to score in the top of the 10th before Marshall retired the side in the bottom half of the inning to secure the doubleheader sweep for the Cardinals.

Clarke and Iannone combined for seven of the Cardinals’ 12 hits in game two. Clarke went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run while Iannone had four hits, an RBI and a run.

Perry drove in three runs in the loss for the Bears.

Marshall earned her second win of the day to improve to 16-4 on the year. She allowed two run, six hits and two walks through 9.2 innings while striking out 14 batters.

Potsdam’s Megan Johnson gave up 12 hits and four earned runs in the complete-game loss.
