Cardinals' Streak Snapped in 12-8 Loss at Mary Washington

Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team suffered a 12-8 loss at the University of Mary Washington in the final game of its spring break trip Saturday afternoon. The loss marks the first of the year for the Cardinals, who drop to 7-1 on the year.

The Eagles (6-2) opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the contest with a goal from John Bohlinger to give Mary Washington a quick lead but Anthony Pafundi retaliated for Plattsburgh State to tie it up at 12:13 of the first quarter.

Plattsburgh State took its only lead of the afternoon at the 11:00 mark of the opening stanza on Brendan Damm’s first of the game from Joey Kramer but Mary Washington tallied the next two to erase the Cardinals’ advantage.

Ryan Hastings’ unassisted goal at 4:06 of the first knotted the score at 3-3 before the teams traded goals on more time to end the quarter tied at 4-4.

Mary Washington broke the game open in the second quarter with four goals. The Cardinals found the back of the net once in the second with a goal by Nick Travers but entered the half facing an 8-5 deficit.

The Cardinals came within two at the start of the third quarter on an unassisted goal by Tom Duggan but the Eagles scored the next three to make it 11-6 and take their largest lead of the afternoon.

Plattsburgh State’s Joey Kramer tallied an unassisted marker with 1:35 remaining in the third and Brett McClelland scored in the final minute of the game but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Eagles.

Damm scored a pair of goals and added an assist for the Cardinals to finish the day with three points. Kramer recorded a goal and two assists. In addition to scoring a goal, Travers picked up a team-high seven ground balls and won six faceoffs.

Joey Marson led the Mary Washington offense with three goals and three assists. Bohlinger and Billy Kelley added three goals apiece while Sean Dacey tallied three points.

Gordie Gehring allowed 12 goals and made eight stops in 51:05, suffering the loss for the Cardinals. Eric Howard stepped in net for the final 8:55 but did not make a save. Eagles’ goalkeeper Zack Del Grosso recorded 20 saves in the win.

Plattsburgh State led in shots, 48-30, and in ground balls, 40-29. The two teams went a combined 0 for 10 on extra-man opportunities.

The Cardinals return home for a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon against Clarkson University. Game time is 4 p.m. at the Field House Lacrosse Complex.
