Softball Goes 3-1 in Two Days at NTC Spring Games

Ashley Marshall picked up a combined 31 strikeouts in four games for the Cardinals.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State softball team posted a 3-1 record in four games at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. over the last two days. The Cardinals, who are ranked ninth is the last National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Poll, defeated Babson, Amherst and Western New England University. Plattsburgh State’s loss came in Monday’s first game to Plymouth State.
 
Sunday, March 17
Plattsburgh 4, Babson 1
Babson took advantage of a Plattsburgh State error in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Babson’s Catie Funk reached third on an error by Cardinals’ center fielder Megan Price before scoring on a wild pitch to give the Beavers the lead.
 
Price redeemed herself in the bottom of the second, driving in Kristin Nabor with an RBI single up the middle to tie it up. 
 
The game remained knotted at 1-1 until the Cardinals broke it open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Kerry McCarty singled to center field, but a throwing error by the Babson center fielder allowed Nabor to cross the plate for Plattsburgh State’s second run. Price followed with a single down the left-field line, allowing Samantha Tenney and McCarty to score.
 
Price and Nabor each picked up two hits while the Cardinals totaled seven on the day. Michelle Iannone drew two walks.
 
Samantha Moss tossed three innings, allowing one run on one hit and two walks. Ashley Marshall worked the final four innings, giving up one hit and striking out six.
 
Plattsburgh 8, Amherst 7
The Cardinals emerged victorious in a back-and forth battle with Amherst, winning 8-7 to complete the Sunday sweep.
 
Amherst quickly took a 2-0 lead, but Plattsburgh State responded with three runs in the top of the second. The Jeffs quickly answered back, scoring three two-out runs in the bottom half of the season to make it 5-3 in favor of Amherst. The Cardinals broke through with three runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead but a sacrifice fly for Amherst in the bottom of the fifth tied it up.
 
The Cardinals took the lead for good with a pair of runs of the Amherst bullpen in the sixth. Amherst came within one in the bottom of the sixth, but the Cardinals’ pitching staff was able to hang on for the win.
 
Samantha Moss threw 1.2 innings and allowed two hits and five runs. Ashley Marshall was credited with the win, going 5.1 innings in relief. Marshall gave up two runs on five hits while striking out six batters.
 
Brittany Marshall finished the day with 3 RBIs and Sam Capobianco went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Michelle Iannone and Kristine Gay each drove in a run while Brianna Clarke drew three walks.
 
Monday, March 18
Plymouth State 3, Plattsburgh 2
Kristin Fisher got the start for the Cardinals, allowing three runs on five hits through three innings of work. The sophomore pitcher recorded three strikeouts in her first appearance.
 
Ashley Marshall went the rest of the way in the circle, holding Plymouth State to just one hit while striking out five.
 
Plattsburgh State got on the board in the second inning when back-to-back single by Samantha Tenney and Kerry McCarty put a runner in scoring position. Megan Price drew a walk to load the back before Plymouth State walked Brittany Marshall to bring in the Cardinals’ first run of the afternoon.
 
The Cardinals score again in the sixth on an RBI single by Megan Price, but that was as close as Plattsburgh State would get in its second loss of the season.
 
Plattsburgh 1, Western New England 0
Ashley Marshall dominated in the circle for Plattsburgh State, tossing seven scoreless innings in the win against Western New England University. She allowed just two outs while racking up 14 strikeouts.
 
The Cardinals scored the lone run of the game in the seventh thanks to a bit of small ball. Samantha Tenney drew a walk before a sacrifice bunt by Kerry McCarty moved put Tenney in scoring position. A long fly ball to right field by Megan Price allowed Tenney to advance to third before coming home on an RBI single to left by Brittany Marshall.
 
Plattsburgh State is 4-2 through its first six games of the 2013 season. The Cardinals are off Tuesday before resuming play on Wednesday with games against Trinity College and UMass-Boston.
