Cardinals Knock Off Oneonta in SUNYAC Men's Soccer Semifinals

Mitchell Jordon made seven saves in his sixth shutout of the season for the Cardinals.
Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. – Matt Hamilton scored in the 44th minute while the Plattsburgh State defense held up its end of the bargain to lead the men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Oneonta in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinals Wednesday afternoon at Red Dragon Field.

Plattsburgh State grabbed the lead at the 43:18 mark of the first half when Steve Zacharczyk collected a pass out of the back and carried it forward before making a pass to the left flank. Hamilton carried the ball into the box and took a shot that appeared to be heading wide. But the shot deflected off a charging Oneonta defender trying to get back into the play and past Oneonta goalkeeper Vincent Pellegrino.

Despite an 18-11 advantage in shots for the Red Dragons, the Cardinals' defense buckled down for the shutout. Plattsburgh State goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon have the Cardinals another solid performance, making seven saves to earn his sixth shutout and improve to 10-4-0 on the year.

Pellegrino stopped five shots for Oneonta in the loss.

Hamilton led the Cardinals with three shots on goal in Wednesday's matchup. With his goal serving as the game winner, Hamilton now has a team-high five game-winning goals on the year.

The win, which moves the Cardinals to 14-5-1 overall, is the first for Plattsburgh State in Oneonta since 1968. The loss drops Oneonta to 11-4-4 on the year and is the first the Red Dragons have suffered to a conference opponent this season.

In the other SUNYAC semifinal matchup on Wednesday, second-seeded Cortland defeated third-seeded Brockport, 1-0, to earn its spot in the SUNYAC finals.

The Cardinals will travel to Cortland for a Saturday showdown with their sights set on their eighth conference title. The SUNYAC Championship game gets underway at 1 p.m. at Jets Field on the campus of SUNY Cortland. The winner of Saturday's game will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
