NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team won the Norwich East/West Classic Championship after defeating Manhattanville, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena en route to a 2-0 opening weekend.
Jenny Kistner scored the Cardinals' lone goal at 6:54 of the first period from Bridget Balisy, giving Plattsburgh State all the offense it would need to secure the victory.
The Cardinals (2-0-0) outshot the Valiants by a 30-14 margin. The power play units of both squads were quiet Sunday as Plattsburgh State went 0-for-2 and Manhattanville (0-1-1) went 0-for-4.
Sydney Aveson picked up her second-straight shutout with 14 stops. Manhattanville goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy made 29 saves in the loss.
In the second game of the afternoon, Norwich (1-1-0) held on for a 3-2 victory over Elmira (0-1-1).
With three goals and an assist on the weekend, Balisy was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Aveson and Allison Era represented the Cardinals on the All-Tournament Team, which also included Shaughnessy, Brittany Sharman and Tori Charron of Norwich and Cassidy Delainey of Elmira.
Plattsburgh State will have little time to enjoy the successful weekend as the Cardinals travel to Potsdam on Tuesday evening for their Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Maxcy Ice Arena.
