Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Advantages in shots (14-10) and corner kicks (5-2) did not translate to a win for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team as the Cardinals dropped a 1-0 decision to SUNYAC enemy Brockport at the Field House Complex on Friday afternoon.
With the setback, the Cardinals fall to 4-10-2 and 2-5-1 in league play while the Golden Eagles improve to 9-4-1 and 4-3-1 in conference bouts.
Needing to obtain a victory to keep their SUNYAC playoff hopes alive, Plattsburgh State came out and set the offensive tone of the match early on. In the first 6:03 of the tilt, both freshman Diana DiCocco and junior Charisse Abellard tallied a pair of shots.
Both of the Cardinals closed to within close range before forcing Brockport keeper Laura Thompson to come up with her first two saves of the match.
On the heels of the initial Plattsburgh State offensive flurry, the Golden Eagles came up with their first shot of the afternoon when Courtney Szczesniak sent a strong ball at Cardinals' goal keeper Kristy Kirkpatrick.
Maintaining the offensive tempo of the match, the Cardinals booted two more shots at Thompson before Brockport came up with the only score of the match.
Directly after the Cardinals were hit with their second foul of the bout, Brockport sent a free kick opportunity toward the mouth of the Plattsburgh State goal. The ball was deflected on the initial strike, but found its way to the foot of Chelsea Stahl, who directed her shot past Kirkpatrick from three yards out at 20:44.
The goal came off of one of the five shots the Golden Eagles were able to produce in the opening 45-minute frame.
Playing from behind, the Cardinals spent the rest of the game trying to come up with the equalizer. Plattsburgh State continued to strike the ball at Thompson, registering another six shots in the first 15 minutes of second-half action, but none of them were able to get through.
In the first 30 seconds of the 63
rd minute, Plattsburgh State had perhaps its best scoring chances of the match go by the wayside. Melissa Rodriguez attempted a pair of corner kicks for the Cardinals, but neither of them settled down enough for her teammates to put on net.
Try as they might to force the ball into Brockport territory during the closing minutes of the match, the Cardinals were rewarded with just one more shot after the aforementioned pair of corner kicks.
DiCocco led the Cardinals' offensive effort with game highs in shots (five) as well as shots on goal (three). Abellard totaled three more shots for the home team while sophomores Cammey Keyser and Cassidy Clavet each took two.
Kirkpatrick (3-6-1) made seven saves for Plattsburgh State.
Plattsburgh State will play its final conference game of 2013 on Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals welcome SUNY Geneseo to the Field House Complex. Prior to the start of the 1 p.m. match Plattsburgh State will be celebrating the contributions of its senior class – LaLone and Lauren Gonyea – in a short ceremony.
