Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman forward Diana DiCocco conjured up her third goal of the season in the 85
th minute to knot things at one goal each, but the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team was unable to complete its comeback bid, falling 2-1 in overtime at SUNYAC foe Buffalo State on Friday afternoon.
Through the extra-time tilt, the Cardinals (4-8-2, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) held an advantage in shots (12-6) as well as shots on goal (8-3) over the Bengals (9-4-1, 5-1 SUNYAC).
Just 47 seconds into the important conference contest, Emily LaLone attempted the first and only corner kick of the afternoon for the Cardinals. Unfortunately, the visiting squad was whistled for its first of nine fouls shortly thereafter, negating any kind of scoring opportunity.
With 1:31 elapsed in the match, Kristy Kirkpatrick made her only save when she turned aside a scoring attempt by Jordan Dudish.
Plattsburgh State's brigade of back line players didn't afford the Bengals many scoring attempts, but the home team hit pay dirt on just their second shot on goal. Megan Chapple redirected a cross by Lauren Delaney that beat Kirkpatrick and gave Buffalo State a 1-0 advantage at the 37:32 mark.
Matters turned more physical to say the least during the opening minutes of the second frame. The Bengals were hit with five foul calls in the first 12 minutes and neither team recorded a shot until LaLone sent a header at Buffalo State keeper Linda Banfield at 62:03.
Shortly after each team was hit with a yellow card, the offensive persistence of DiCocco finally paid off for the Cardinals. The Schenectady, N.Y., product left a pair of Buffalo State defenders in the dust before corralling a loose ball and sending the equalizer past Banfield at 85:32. LaLone registered her first assist of the season on the goal.
Keeping the pressure on Banfield in the opening minutes of the overtime frame, DiCocco and Lauren Gonyea each sent a shot at the Bengals' netminder.
The last foul of the day, though, proved to be the most costly. Directly after the Cardinals were disciplined for their physical play, Buffalo State's Jordan Dudish lobbed her 28-yard free kick attempt over the head of Kirkpatrick to account for the winning tally at 94:44.
DiCocco took just as many shots on goal as the entire Buffalo State team, and finished with a game-high four shots. Kirkpatrick (3-4-1) made one save in the setback while Banfield stopped seven Plattsburgh State shots.
The Cardinals will take part in their final SUNYAC road test of the 2013 regular season when they make the trip to Fredonia, N.Y., to take on the Blue Devils. The Saturday conference bout is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
