Plattsburgh State Battles Oneonta to 0-0 Draw in First Home SUNYAC Action of 2013

Melissa Rodriguez took a game-high six shots in the Cardinals' 0-0 tie against Oneonta.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With its first home State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match of 2013 coinciding with the halfway point of their league schedule, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team was able to pick up an important point as the Cardinals battled Oneonta State to a 0-0 double-overtime tie at the Field House Complex on Friday afternoon.

Thanks to a strong offensive game plan, the Cardinals (3-7-2 , 1-2-1 SUNYAC) kept the pressure on the Red Dragons' (5-3-3, 2-0-3 SUNYAC) defensive corps all match long as they outshot the visitors 23-13.

The Cardinals earned a 5-4 win in the penalty shootout, which is used to calculate playoff position in the SUNYAC postseason picture. Hannah Saccocio, Ashley Pagano, Megan Colby, Charisse Abellard and Lauren Gonyea each made their shootout attempts, and junior keeper Kristy Kirkpatrick smothered Liz Lasota's attempt to help the Cardinals come out ahead.

Although the final shot totals were impressive for the Cardinals, the two squads battled through a defensive first frame.
Plattsburgh State had the best chance to come away with a goal during the opening 45-minute half, as sophomore Melissa Rodriguez took a pair of corner kicks at 39:45 and 41:46. Both of the resulting shots by the Cardinals, though, strayed from the Oneonta State goal mouth.

The corner kick opportunities continued to pile up for the home team in the early stages of the second half. In the 52nd minute, sophomore Devin McMahon attempted three, but the Cardinals couldn't settle the ball down enough to attempt any shots during that stretch.

One of the most impressive defensive plays of the game came late in the second half. With the Red Dragons on the attack, Plattsburgh State netminder Kristy Kirkpatrick found herself out of position as Oneonta's Karly DeSimone wound up for a shot.

With DeSimone's shot on its way to the Plattsburgh State goal, sophomore defender Hannah Saccocio stepped in and headed the shot off target to preserve the scoreless tie at the 75:27 mark.

In the final 10:41 of regulation, the Cardinals fired off a total of six shots toward Oneonta State's Rori Stark, but only two made it through to test the Red Dragons' keeper. Three of the shots were turned aside by deflections off of Oneonta defenders.

The Cardinals continued to pepper Stark with shots in the first overtime period, forcing the Oneonta State player to make three saves in the 10-minute period.

Plattsburgh State's best scoring opportunity came in the second overtime frame. Rodriguez snuck past the Oneonta State back line, and found herself one-on-one with Stark. As soon as she got her shot off, though, an Oneonta defender caught up and deflected what would have been the game-winner out of bounds.

Plattsburgh State outshot the Red Dragons 8-1 in the overtime sessions and forced Stark to make eight saves during the bout. Kirkpatrick (2-3-1) came up with a trio of saves for the Cardinals who double up Oneonta in the corner kick department (6-3).

In possession of one crucial SUNYAC point thanks to their tie against Oneonta State, the Cardinals set their sights on picking up another pair of points when they welcome New Paltz (2-8-3, 0-4-1 SUNYAC) to the Field House Complex on Saturday afternoon. The league match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
