Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. – After watching its slim 1-0 lead disappear late in the game, it looked as if the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team would escape with a tie. But Oneonta had a different plan as the Red Dragons scored the game-winning goal with three seconds left in the second overtime to hand the Cardinals a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup at Red Dragon Field.
Tom Greene provided an offensive spark for the Cardinals as the senior forward just missed a goal in the early going, hitting the post at the 4:02 mark. Six minutes later, Greene put Plattsburgh State on the board with his third of the year from Fabian Chaparro.
Despite holding a 7-3 advantage in shots at the end of the half, the Cardinals were unable to add on to their lead. Oneonta goalkeeper Vincent Pellegrino made four stops in the first half and finished the game with seven.
Holding on to a lead on Oneonta's field has been a tough task for the Cardinals in recent year and Friday's contest proved to be no different. The Cardinal defense was able to weather the storm until the 78
th minute when Dylan Williams scored on a header off a cross pass from Jake Sutherland to tie the game at 1-1.
Both sides had a chance to put the game away in the 82
nd minute but neither team could get the ball past the goal line. Oneonta's Jake Sutherland saw his shot turned away by Plattsburgh State goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon just thirty-three seconds before Plattsburgh State's Matt Hamilton rung a shot off the post and the two teams headed to overtime.
As the final minute of overtime began to tick off the clock, it appeared a tie would be inevitable but a restart in the final seconds set the Red Dragons up for the win. Zef Saljanin's header sailed to the left of Jordon with three seconds left on the clock, giving Oneonta the 2-1 victory. Williams picked up the assist on the game-winning goal.
The loss drops the Cardinals to 8-3-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Red Dragons improve to 8-2-3 on the year and 4-0-1 in the SUNYAC.
Oneonta finished the afternoon with an edge in shots, 16-12, and corner kicks, 9-7. Pellegrino made seven saves in the win while Jordon turned away nine shots for Plattsburgh State in the loss.
The Cardinals will look to snap their two-game skid tomorrow in a conference game at New Paltz. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
