PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite some late pressure from Keene State, the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team was able to hang on for a 2-1 win against the Owls to take the 2012 Cardinal Classic Championship Sunday at the Field House Soccer Complex.
The two teams battling for the title matched up well, playing a scoreless first half. Plattsburgh State (2-0-0) began the second half with an outstanding scoring opportunity when Kayla Rabideau rang a shot off the post in the 50
th minute. The Cardinals finally broke through at 56:34 when Cammey Keyser got her first collegiate goal on a header from two yards out off a cross by Lauren Gonyea.
Kristie Pageau tapped a ball into the box for Ashley McKenelley, who made a nice move around a Keene State (1-1-0) defender to pick up the pass. McKennelly drove the ball across the box to Cassidy Clavet, who fired a shot from just outside the ten-yard box to beat Owls’ goaltender Victoria Crenson at 62:14.
Hayley Kenyon made it a one-goal game with her second of the season in the 66
th minute with a short tap-in from less than two yards out. Jessica Berthiaume assisted on Keene State’s lone goal.
Both teams finished the day with 12 shots and two corner kicks. Crenson took the loss for the Owls with three saves. Plattsburgh’s Monica D’Ippolito earned her second win of the year, also making three stops.
Pageau was named Offensive Most Valuable Player while Cardinal freshman Hannah Saccocio was honored as the Defensive Most Valuable Player. Plattsburgh’s Cassidy Clavet and Macee Maddock were named to the All-Tournament Team, joining Keene State’s Kenyon and Jane Walsh and Johnson State’s Katja Langmaid.
The Cardinals return to action Wednesday as Castleton State makes the trip to Plattsburgh for a non-conference matchup. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Johnson State 1, Lyndon State 0 (2OT)
Sunday’s consolation game featured a battle of the two Vermont schools, with Johnson State (1-1-0) coming out on top with a 1-0 win over Lyndon State (0-2-0) in double overtime.
The two teams battled into the 103
rd minute before Amanda Frawley’s unassisted effort found the back of the net.
Johnson State outshot the Hornets, 15-7, including a 4-0 advantage in overtime. The Badgers took two corner kicks while the Hornets finished the day with three.
Lyndon State’s Emily Strese recorded two saves through 77:08 before turning things over to Larissa Bargfrede who finished with a pair of saves in the loss.
Badgers’ goaltender Katja Langmaid proved to be the difference maker Sunday afternoon. In the first half, Langmaid made an impressive diving stop to keep Lyndon State off the board. Langmaid topped that in the final minute of regulation, making a leaping grab off a shot by Lyndon State’s Sarah Cornell to send the game to overtime.
