Cardinals Come Up Empty in 1-0 Setback Against Vassar

Box Score
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – For the second time in the past three contests, a penalty kick was the cause of anguish for the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team as the Cardinals dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Vassar College on Saturday (Sept. 15) at the Field House Complex.

Kelsey Domb tallied the lone goal of the match, sending a low ball past Plattsburgh State keeper Danielle Schmitt in the 60th minute of action. The Cardinals (4-3-0) were whistled for a handball citation after Schmitt couldn’t corral the initial shot from Vassar’s (5-1-0) Kamaria Coley roughly ten yards from the mouth of the net which led to the penalty kick attempt.

The Cardinals controlled the majority of the first half action, spending much time in the Brewers’ end of the field. Perhaps the best chance offensive opportunity for the home squad came early on in the 32nd minute when senior Renee Egan fired a strong shot toward the Vassar net that deflected off the middle portion of the crossbar.

Kristie Pageau also came up just inches short as her game-tying attempt bounced off the far post in the 78th minute.

Plattsburgh State had a difficult time getting shots on net, outpacing the Brewers in the overall shot category 14-13, but just two of those attempts were fired on target through the course of the 90-minute contest. The Cardinals were also charged with a trio of offsides calls in the match.

The edge in corner kicks went to the Cardinals, though, who attempted six compared to three by the Brewers.

The Cardinals will receive one more opportunity to hone their game against a non-conference foe before their SUNYAC slate of games begins when Middlebury College rolls into Plattsburgh on Wednesday (Sept. 18). The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
