PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – On a night when the Plattsburgh State baseball team honored former Cardinal Brian Mehan and increased awareness for the Be The Match Morrow Registry, the Cardinals also came away with a 7-2 win against SUNY Canton in a non-conference game at Lefty Wilson Field.
Tuesday’s game was part of a day-long event for the Cardinal baseball team to honor Mehan, a member of the team who lost his battle with cancer four years ago. Earlier in the afternoon, members of the team hosted a “Be The Match” Drive on-campus while members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee conducted a drive at the game. Fans also had the opportunity to win numerous raffle prizes with all proceeds from the event split evenly between the Be The Match Foundation and the Brian P. Mehan Memorial Scholarship at Plattsburgh High School.
The Roos (9-26) got on the board first when Jordan Hunneyman singled through the left side to bring home Jared Marckese in the top of the first inning. Canton added an unearned run in the second to take an early 2-0 lead.
Plattsburgh (20-15) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second on an RBI double by Casey Brighton and an RBI single by Damian Tyler.
Brighton drove in two more runs in the third before scoring on a single by Mike Varques to give the Cardinals a 5-2 lead.
The Cardinals scored an unearned run in the fifth and Mike Mulvihill hit a solo home run over the left field fence in the sixth to round out the offense for the night.
Brighton had a nice night at the plate for Plattsburgh, going 2-for-3 with three RBIS and two runs scored. Tyler and Jon Handy each added two hits. Pat Shaughnessy swiped three bases for the Cardinals.
Dylan Casselman, Chris Jones, Gerardo Torres and Tom Darling had two hits apiece for Canton. Phil Tsiaras drove in the second Roos’ run.
Tyler Greene got the start for the Cardinals, allowing an earned run on four hits through two innings. Kyle Kelly earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings. Marc Plante and Brian Burns each gave Plattsburgh two innings of work before Mike Doughtie pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Plattsburgh tagged the loss on Canton starter Dom Deliberti, who gave up 10 hits and six earned runs. Travis Legacy and Mike Zelyez combined for three scoreless innings.
The Cardinals wrap up the regular season tomorrow at Canton. The non-conference doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m.
