PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team closed out its home and conference slate on Monday, falling to Canton.
Canton struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of an outfield error following a single by Jared Paone to grab a 1-0 lead. The visitors added to their advantage in the second, beginning with an RBI single from AJ Campi before Sal Diaz launched a three-run home run to left field, pushing the score to 5-0.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom half of the second inning, as Michael Mann (Rensselaer, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) delivered an RBI single to center field to score Ryan Hart (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and put Plattsburgh on the board.
Canton continued to build its lead in the third inning, capitalizing on a combination of timely hitting and Plattsburgh miscues. A wild pitch brought in one run before Korbin Lovejoy added an RBI single. Another Cardinal error allowed an additional unearned run to cross, extending the Canton lead to 8-1.
Plattsburgh answered right back in the bottom of the third with a three-run surge. Ian Warren (Esopus, N.Y./Highland) highlighted the rally with a two-run double to left field, scoring Austin Caldwell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Colin Ross (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd). Mann followed with his second RBI hit of the game, a double to left, cutting the deficit to 8-4.
The Kangaroos tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, to stretch the lead to 10-4. The Cardinals chipped away in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Jackson Pam (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East). In the fifth, Plattsburgh added another run on a double play ball off the bat of Mann, trimming the deficit to 10-6.
After several scoreless innings, the Cardinals made things interesting in the seventh. Jackson Pam doubled to right-center field, driving in Bostyn Duquette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Mann to pull Plattsburgh within two at 10-8. However, the comeback effort would fall short as Canton held on over the final frames.
With the loss, the Cardinals move to 15-16 overall and 5-13 in conference play and will wrap up their season with a road doubleheader tomorrow against St. Lawrence.
