Softball Blows Bears Away on Senior Day

The Cardinals honored five seniors prior to the start of the second game today.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State softball team (25-8, 14-4 SUNYAC) used a blistering hot offense to sweep Potsdam (11-23, 2-16 SUNYAC) 8-0 and 12-0 on Senior Day in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday.
 
The Cardinals honored five seniors in between games today. Erin Florkiewicz, Katie McNally, Heather Loughran, Dana Mandery and Allison Smiddy were all recognized for their contribution to the program.
 
Game One:

The Cardinals got things going with a big second inning. With two Cardinals already on base, Dana Mandery stepped up and hit a triple into right field. With Mandery now on third base, Megan Price smacked a home run up the center to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead going into the third inning. 
 
Erin Flowkiewicz added an RBI single in the third inning when she drove in Katie McNally. Allison Smiddy launched a big home run to make it 6-0 in the fourth inning. Plattsburgh ended the game early after notching two runs in the fifth inning. Brianna Clarke singled to left field to bring home Mandery and Marshall.
 
Heather Loughran was impressive from the circle for the Cardinals in the win. She allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters. Ashley Thayer took the loss for the Bears after pitching three innings and giving up nine hits.
 
Game Two:

The Cardinals started game two much like game one, as Clarke hit a two-run homer in the first inning.  In the second inning the Cardinals tacked on a run when Allison Smiddy was walked with the bases loaded, Kayla Rabideau came home on the play.
 
Plattsburgh lit the Bears up in the third inning to blow the game wide open. Melanie Hayes stole home in to make it 4-0 before Florkiewicz double up the center to bring in McNally. Florkiewicz then stole home herself and Mandery added a home run. Smiddy notched an RBI when she singled up the middle and Marshall went from first to home to give the Cardinals an 8-0 advantage. Samantha Capobianco hit a three-run homer to extend the leader further and take the Cardinals into the fourth inning.
 
Mandery piled on another run when she hit her second home run of the game to make it 12-0 and then Smiddy drove in Marshall to give the Cardinals all of the scoring they would need.
 
Ashley Marshall earned the win for the Cardinals after striking out 13 batters and allowing zero runs in the five innings played.
 
The Cardinals return to action tomorrow when face Union College for a non-conference double header at Cardinal Park. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
